Túnica cai-cai (ou não!) - Not so strapless tunic

Português
English (uncheck the other box and check this one)

Modelo original: Burda Junho 2009 modelo 113

Original model: BWOF June 2009 model 113

Description (from BurdaFashion website): “This strapless Jersey tunic is guaranteed not to slip out of place! The figure-hugging bust section with front darts is covered with a wrap-over piece and fitted with elastic casing for extra support.”

For better understanding the structure of this tunic, here’s how the pattern looks like (all the pattern pieces are cut on the fabric fold); the bust section is #1:

Fabric: lightweight jersey

Both Sigrid and Marita preceded me in making this model and their notes were most useful. Neither of the two followed BWOF’s directions for the making of this tunic, which implied an added knit lining for the bodice adding to the overall bulk (you already have too many fabric layers to sew together adding the double draping on the front). Sigrid made the top joining the draped pieces with the bodice pieces, sewing everything together, applying the elastic directly to the upper raw edge and turning it in hiding the elastic (I used this same method on the waistline of the Donna Karan jersey pants). Marita sewed the top and the draped sections separately and then sewed the two together on the top edge so the SAs are inside and between the top and the draped section; the elastic is then sewn to the SAs and will be hidden under the draped sections. I followed this same method.

Alterations: I omitted the lining and followed a different construction method, as stated above; I added decorative trim straps (they’re elastic) with metallic accents adding a little glamour to this simple top.

Details:

If you lift the draped panels and take a peek underneath, this is what you see: the elastic sewn to the hidden SAs around the upper edge:

I sewed the darts facing the right side of the chest panel; they will be hidden by the draped sections and the interior of the top looks neater; only the bodice junction SA and the side SAs are visible from the inside:

When I sewed the draped sections to the bodice, I encased the trim straps between the two; this trim is very beautiful, kind of origami constructed with metallic accents. It’s also elastic. Here's a picture without flash so you can see it better:

Conclusion: An easy yet distinctive beautiful tunic (its true color is Ferrari red; as usual I can't trust my camera to show the true colors); the construction is easier if you follow either Sigrid’s or Marita’s steps and the end result is equally perfect! Have a great week!

The straps are a beautiful addition to this tunic. Lovely color, that red. I can see it with very narrow black pants. I'm sure it looks fabulous on you.

Fabulous tunic! I love the draping! I can definitely see why lining it would have been way too much! Great call!

No acierto a comprender.

Ah, a cor vermelho ferrari é simplesmente a tua cara...

Hi Tany. I have been reading your blog for a long time now, but it is my first post. You are a very talented seamstress. I am amazed at the speed you sew, too. Do you work as a seamstress or is sewing your hobby?
also, I have noticed the tags you have on your clothes, can I have a closer look at those? Are they woven or printed? Keep up a great work!

Fab - love the color, of course! When I was looking over the top in regards to Sigird's posts, I had thought about wide straps. I think your placement is clever and unique - nice end result.

Hello Tany, I have this number of Burda tendance mode. This top is very tempting. I am happy to see the result with straps. I had the same idea. I love the final result. Thank you for sharing.

Lena in New Zealand: Thanks! I sew as a hobby for myself, I've never sewn professionally and in general I don't like sewing for others. I work full time as Telecommunications Engineer in the main Telecommunications Company in Portugal (PT). I sew a lot, that’s true, because it’s something that I really love doing; The past week was particularly prolific because I took a few days off and made the most of my time. These knit garments were fast easy to put together too.
My tags/labels are woven and silver embroidered; I ordered them from a UK website. I’m glad that you like them!

Paco: Gracias!

Thank you all for the lovely comments!

Gracias a todos(as)!
