V1526C sewing review (Paco Peralta for Vogue: the pants) – O artigo sobre a confeção das calças do molde V1526

EN Summary: The pants included in V1526 are straight, tailored and quite minimalist when you look at them from the outside. The inside hides beautiful construction details like the waist facings, fly-font zipper with separate fly facing and fly-extension, and the inseam pockets with the pocket pouches anchored on the fly-front and waistline seam. Keep reading for more.

EN: The fabric used was not what I had in mind primarily; I wanted some sort of light eggplant color wool for the pants but the only fabric I could find in this specific color was wool crepe and I was looking for a different texture for the pants; the alternative was using this poly/viscose blend twill weave from my stash. It has some advantages though: a very soft touch to the skin and it doesn’t get wrinkled easily.

EN: My usual Vogue size is the 14. I always measure the pattern and compare its measurements to my body’s measurements to see if it has the amount of ease I like. Vogue patterns come with indication of the final garment measurements at the waist and hip so the first thing I did was taking a tape measure and try those same measurements on my body. The hip line had the perfect amount of ease needed on a pair of tailored pants but the waistline felt a little too tight for my taste so I decided to add an inch at the waist (adding 1/4 inch at the sides of the pattern, including pocket bag and pocket facing, tapering into nothing at the hip). Since there is no waistband and the waistline sits at the natural waist, in my opinion the waistline should fit snug, but not tight. The total length, the crotch length and crotch curve looked right to me so I went ahead without making a toile/muslin.

EN: These pants are intended to be creased but I decided not to crease for two reasons:

1- Personal preference; I tend to prefer pants without creases; yet I had my doubts about this model.

2 – This fabric is difficult to press without leaving an impression; even using a press cloth, if I applied too much pressure and steam over any seam, it would get that nasty shine on the right side. I had to apply light pressure with the steam iron and use my hands to settle it instead of the weight of the iron and a clapper. On straight seams I placed them over a seam roll and used the tip of the iron to press them open, then my hands to cool them off. I also used strips of paper under the darts and a tailor ham to press the darts to one side (see a photo of the finished dart below); I didn’t press the darts from the right side to avoid over-pressing on this particular fabric.

If I make these pants again, I will try to crease them as on traditional tailored pants. Paco gave me a good tip for the creasing: before stitching the pants together, take the back pant leg, fold it in half lengthwise with inner and outer seams together and crease it lightly; then when the pants are finished, this first crease line will act as a reference for creasing the front leg, making it a lot easier to get the creases right.

EN: The inseam pockets are explained in the instructions using the same method used on the jacket. This time I tried Paco’s method, which adds a couple of advantages: it’s easier and it takes less bulk. It’s also possible to use this method on a finished garment, just to add pockets on a finished seam. Instead of adding the facing to both inner and outer pocket bag, I added it to the inner pocket bag alone (the pocket bag staying closer to the body); the outer pocket bag is entirely made of lining and uses the front seam allowance as partial facing. To prepare the inner pocket bag, instead of turning under the edges of the facing and topstitch it to the pocket bag, I bound the long edge of the facing (Hong-Kong finish) and stitched it down to the pocket bag on the final stitching pass. Then I continued with a zigzag stitch along the lower end (see photo below). Instead I could have zigzagged the longer edge as well but I thought the bias trim was kind of cute (no one will ever now it is there besides you and me,…).

EN: If you’re making the pants and decide on using Paco’s method, don’t forget to shave off the 5/8” seam allowance on the lining-only pocket bag before attaching it to the front pant seam allowance; it will make it align with the inner pocket bag in the end. Paco’s tutorial is in Spanish but I think the photos are self-explanatory; the only difference is that in this the pocket bags are stitched all the way up the side seam because the pocket bags anchor on the waist seam.
---
EN: Using the jacket's orange lining remnants to make the bias strips was a good idea (I also used the purple lining remnants to make the bias binding along the facing of the jacket).
---

EN: I followed the instructions for making the fly-front opening with zipper yet instead of double-fold bias binding I used bias-cut lining strips and the Hong-Kong finish on the pocket bag edges, waist facings, front-fly facing and front-fly extension. The pant’s vertical seams and pocket edges were all serged.
---

CONCLUSION: When I first tried the pants on I was relieved to see the fit was spot on (I was taking a risk not making a muslin or basting it all together and try it before stitching it permanently) and I could see my instincts were right. LOVE how these pants fit. I think I’ve found my new TNT pants pattern!

If you haven’t already, hop over to Tany et La Mode and see me wearing the complete set! Thank you all for the support and nice comments! More later on the sewing front!

ADORO como as calças me assentam.

Beautiful! I didn't yet buy the pattern because dolman sleeves and high collars are not the best look on me. Now I see it is worth buying it for the pants alone!

They are beautiful - inside and out. I must make these - I have the same fabric (or very similar) so it is nice to see what they will look like.
