V1527 view A (the Long Tuxedo Jacket): lining the body of the jacket - Forrar o corpo da jaqueta

EN Summary: The way this jacket is lined is a bit unconventional and I thought I should demonstrate my process which differs a little from the instructions because the lining is entirely stitched to the jacket by machine and the front bottom edge corners and bottom vent corners are also finished differently. I also found another glitch in the instructions, regarding the construction of the back vent on the lining. This post is photo heavy and rather technical, but hopefully it will all make sense in the end. Keep on reading.

Continuem a ler o artigo completo.

EN: The back facing of this jacket doesn't match the front facing, it matches the collar inset on the shoulders inset; because of this the lining shell can't be constructed separately and then stitched around the facings as we usually do, and the instructions got this part right, leaving the jacket's shoulder seams unstitched before attaching the lining. The lining sewn constructed in stages: first the center back seam & back wearing ease pleat are constructed on the lining; then the instructions will tell you to stitch the lining vent to the back vent but it's possible to change the order and stitch the back facing to the back lining first:
---
EN: Then the facing is stitched to the jacket's back neckline and understitched (which is easier to do if you haven't already stitched down the lining vent BTW):
---
EN: Then I proceeded as instructed to stitch the lining to the right edge of the vent (the one that extends); I left the last couple of inches unstitched, stitched the lining to the hem and stopped before reaching the edge of the back lining (which will join to the lining side panel later) and then stitched the last couple of inches along the bottom of the vent down to the hem, forming a pleat on the lining; I under-stitched and pressed along the vent as seen, and the right bottom corner of the vent was clean-finished instead of left open to be finished by hand later:
---
EN: When I tried to stitch the lining to the left side of the vent (the side that folds in on the jacket side) the lining wouldn't match and a weird pleat was formed on the top of the lining vent. I went back to see what I had done wrong and came to the conclusion that I was mislead by the instructions and by a third circle on the tissue pattern that wasn't supposed to be there anyway; in the next photo I highlight the mistake and label both large circles (A on the left back lining and B on the right back lining); the right way would be stitching A and B together along the outer seam as I tried to draw with a red marker:
---
EN: I had to unpick that small section on the lining and stitch it correctly; after that everything lined up as it was supposed to. I marked the old stitching line on the right side (left on the photo) so you can see what it looked like:
---
EN: I was able to finish the bottom corner of the left side of the vent as I usually do because there's a vent facing along the vent there; again I only stitched the adjacent hem, stopping before reaching the side panel. I will try to explain this finishing technique ahead, because it's the same used on the front bottom corners.
---
EN: With the back lining stitched to the neckline and back vent, I moved on to stitching the front lining to the front facing. NOTE: at this point the lining side panels and fronts could be stitched to the back lining and then to the front facings with the jacket inside out (remember the shoulder seams are still open), but since I want to tack down the front facings and back vent extension/facing as far as I can from the wrong side, stitching the front lining to the facings first will give me easy access without having to turn the jacket inside out so many times; it's a very long jacket, lots of fabric and rather messy to work with as a single piece. So now let's learn how to achieve that bottom hem/facing(lining intersection, it's easier than it looks.
Start by pressing the hem up; this is very important and this method won't work without this previous step; then stitch the lining to the facing ALL THE WAY DOWN (the lining should end roughly halfway the facing hem allowance):
---
EN: Then turn back the facing (right sides together) and stitch as indicated by the chalk traced line: first about an inch along the hemline, then angle down pulling the lining to meet the hem and continuing to stitch at 5/8". If I was bagging the lining the usual way, the lining shell would have been completed and I could go around the hem to the next corner (there would have been an opening on the ling so the jacket could be turned right side out afterwords); in this case the front lining isn't attached to the side panel lining so I must stop before reaching the next vertical seam:
---
EN: When the jacket is turned to the right side, here's how it looks; there's a pleat forming from underneath the facing and along the bottom lining:
---
EN: The facings should be all tacked down as far as possible (don't tack where the facings cross the pocket bags and near the front shoulder shield), which is easy to do without the lining side panels; then it's also easy to place the jacket wrong side out and stitch the lining side panels to the front and back lining. finish off by stitching the rest of the hem to the lining while the jacket is wrong side out. The jacket can be turned right side out easily because the shoulder seams are still open on both jacket and lining. With the jacket right side out, baste the hems in place; turn it to the wrong side one last time and catch-stitch the hem; Finally turn it again to the right side and remove the bastings.
---
EN: The finished hem looks great with the lining entirely stitched by machine. The tacking of the facings and hems provides more integrity to the inner shell of the jacket, similarly to what is made in Couture. We are using modern methods without sacrificing the quality of the final product.
---
EN: The final step to conclude the body of the jacket is stitching the shoulder seams on the lining, facings, collar inset and jacket (from left to right in the photo), on a single pass; don't forget to stabilize the shoulder seam on the jacket with some lining selvage and to reduce bulk where possible.
---
EN: The shoulder seam on the outside of the jacket; I ended up unstitching it and removing some of the ease on the back (about 1/4"), I think the back pattern has too much ease; the size 10 looks alright though, so I suspect the excess must have been added by the grading system:
---
EN: On the wrong side you can see where the back facing meets the collar inset instead of the front facing as usual:
---
EN: So if you've made it this far I hope your head isn't spinning :D. All this lining subject may seem confusing at first but if done right you'll get the perfect finish on this jacket. Next I will construct the sleeves, and attach them to the armholes (not catching the lining armhole); then tack the shoulder pads in (this is done AFTER the sleeves are set in, not before as it reads in the instructions, BTW) then the lining armhole is basted around the jacket's armhole and the lining sleeve is stitched by hand to the armhole. Next post will be about the sleeves and this process! Thank you for reading!
