V1527 view A (the long Tuxedo Jacket): The collar Inset - O encaixe da gola

EN Summary: Today is a Holiday in Portugal and you've guessed it, I've spent most of the day sewing. I've managed to complete the fronts of the jacket and the back is also half way done. The fabric I'm using behaved beautifully but is really hard to photograph, yet I wanted to show the construction details of the collar inset because it's one of the challenging sewing details found in this pattern. Keep reading for all the details!

EN: The first step of the construction is the inseam pockets at the front/side panel seam. I used Paco's method (here) and I prepared the pocket bags by zigzagging one pocket facing to the inner lining pocket bag and by removing the seam allowance of the outer lining pocket bag (the facing is not necessary). Then I stitched the fronts to the side panels and proceeded with the in-seam pocket construction.

EN: The collar inset is ingeniously constructed so the seams will hold the bust shaping to both the front and front facing (the front is all-in-one with the front facing) - note that if you need to make a FBA (Full Bust Alteration), you should enlarge the bust shaping on both the front and facing side, leaving the collar inset width as is; the collar inset should be lengthened to accommodate a larger bust curve. If you're using sew-in interfacing, only the facings and the collar inset are interfaced (excluding SAs); if using fusibles, I'd recommend interfacing the entire front/facing piece as well as the collar inset (block fusing both would be ideal). I also doubled the fusible interfacing on the collar inset but I removed the seam allowances on the second layer. this has proven to be a wise decision because it marks the stitching line quite well on the inset side, so I could be very precise while stitching. The curve on the front/facing piece should be stay-stitched and clipped to accommodate to the inset (it's very important to clip to the bottom corner so you can stitch the entire inset on a single pass). I hand basted it all first and then stitched from the inset side. On the right front there are two sections on the bottom of the inset that should be left unstitched to make the inseam buttonhole (don't forget to back-stitch to reinforce the buttonhole opening).

EN: After the collar inset is stitched in place, check on the right side to see if it's perfectly symmetrical (good thing I thread basted the fold-line ;) ), if the curves are smooth on both sides, and if there's no puckering at the bottom corner:
---
EN: If all is OK, then the inset curved SAs should be notched, the seams pressed open and graded on the facing side (cut to half the SAs width), thus reducing and distributing the bulk evenly along the overlapped seams:
---
EN: When the facing/inset is folded to the inside, both seams should overlap perfectly and the bust shaping should be smooth:
---
PT: Depois de dobrar a vista/encaixe para dentro, ambas as costuras se devem sobrepor exatamente e a frente deve tomar a forma do busto:
EN: One last word of advice: start with the left front/inset (the one without the buttonhole), because it will be underneath and if the corner doesn't turn out 100% perfect, it wont be as evident as the right front which overlaps on top. Also note that good pressing technique is of most importance. Use good pressing tools (a tailor's ham for round shaped seams, a clapper, a pressing cloth and lots of steam). I used a teflon cover on my iron and didn't need the pressing cloth. A good quality wool fabric will behave the very best for this project. Lastly, here's a photo of my left front (this one with natural light so you can see the fabric better); it turned out perfect on the first attempt! :D
---

Beautiful! I am curious. What are you using for your marking thread tracings? They are so nice and bright and thick. Thanks, Tany.

Bunny: Thank you! I'm using Japanese basting thread which comes in several colors. Basically it's a loosely twisted cotton thread that breaks easily. In Portugal all the notion stores stock basting thread but only in white. This blue one was sent to me by a good friend in the U.S.

How fascinating, I love a bust dart hidden in the draft! Beautiful work, looking forward to your next installment.
