EN: I don’t know if you’re aware, but in the context of one of the challenges proposed to the contestants of the Great British Sewing Bee, a limited edition pattern hack was released by Sew Essential in the UK. The pattern (or actually a pattern hack) will enable you to sew a Mondrian dress inspired version. The Mondrian dresses are part of the Yves Saint Laurent Mondrian collection in the sixties and the concept of the dresses is one of the most copied ever. The collection was inspired by Piet Mondrian's canvas paintings:

EN: Vogue Patterns released a Vogue Paris Original exclusive signed by Yves Saint Laurent shortly after, the V1557 (you can read about it on Pattern Vault – click here - and on Paco Peralta’s blog – click here).  The pattern is very rare and sells at a high price; those few lucky ones who have a copy tend to hold on to it.

EN: The patternhack released by Sew Essential contains a similar shaped dress pattern (V9048) and instructions on how to hack it to obtain a Mondrian dress inspired garment. If strictly following the instructions, the end result will resemble the original V1557 dress, yet there are some differences:

- The original dress/V1557 doesn’t have a chest dart, the fullness in embedded in the junction of the front horizontal band with the bottom front piece; the pattern hack has chest darts.
- The original dress has a vertical band along the center back, hiding a lapped zipper on the side of the band. The pattern hack has a plain white back with center back and invisible zipper.
- The bands of the original dress contain a all-in-one “band facing” on the inside (it looks like a wider seam allowance covering the band wrong side) which is catch-stitched to the other junction seam allowance. The pattern hack adds no facings to the bands.
- The original dress is not lined and has neckline and armhole facings; the pattern hack has a lining and no facings.

- The original dress has small shoulder darts on the back, while the pattern hack has no shoulder shaping.

EN: I’d like to make a dress that resembles the original more closely. I will either draft it from scratch or manipulate V9048 dart placement to achieve a dartless front (a dart which fullness is absorbed by the horizontal band junction). I would also like my fabric (a double-knit with a crepe-like finish It turned out to be a woven! It had me fooled though!) to have additional body (the original dress looks quite structured), so I might underline it with soft knit fusible interfacing; in that case I will most probably line the dress for comfort and additional structure. I intend to add armhole and neckline facings, and also the vertical band on the back. I will have to decide about the zipper; probably an invisible zipper along one of the band’s seams will be less bulky and the overall appearance of the dress back won’t be far from the original dress.
See you guys soon!
