Classic French Jacket: the soothing endeavor of cleaning up the lining – Acabamento do forro, um trabalho relaxante

EN Summary: The quilting lining is one of the characteristics that differentiate the real couture Chanel jackets from the Chanel RTW and the knock offs. It’s a labor intensive work which greatly increases the production cost of a jacket. In this article I show the before progress photos and also photos of the finished lining seams, along with my impressions about the new to me process after cleaning up a few seams.

EN: In the previous photo you can see how the inside of the jacket looks after stitching all vertical seams on the boucle; the lining was quilted to the boucle and its seams are unstitched (except for the side seams which I had already cleaned up at this point). There is much to say regarding this cleaning up process and Susan’s Classic French Jacket video class covers it all including lining alignment on both straight and curved seams (this is very important so you don’t end up with a flat breast area, for example) and how to finish the vent extension on the sleeve. It is great being able to watch her work through the construction of a jacket from beginning to end and this process in particular is very critical to the success of the finished garment.

EN: Here’s a finished lining seam up close; as you can see, it blends in the quilting quite wonderfully. The two fabrics joined together like this (the wool boucle and the silk lining) behave like a totally different fabric and it’s hard to describe the feeling when handling it; it feels luxurious and much alike a high quality thin shearling hive. At this point I have one more seam left to clean up on the body of the jacket (also need to clean up the lining on the sleeves!), then I will pin the shoulder seams together for another fitting session, stitching them permanently if I’m happy how they fit. Next week I will move on to setting in the sleeves, another critical part of the process, and when I get past that, everything will seem easy and straight forward in comparison! So more later!
