A rosa de tecido – The fabric rose

Português
English (uncheck the other box and check this one)

As promised I’m going to try showing you how the fabric rose is constructed and how its pattern extends the front of the jacket:
The center front pattern (there is also a side panel not shown here), includes the back draped collar and the fabric rose, that corresponds to the long appendix extending down from the shoulder. There is also a pattern for the rose facing which is interfaced with thin knit fusible and topstitched to the rose extension (wrong sides together, fringe caught in the middle on the round edge). The straight edge is gathered using a double strand of thread and small running stitches.
Here is the left front pattern for comparison:
The draped back collar is placed on a different angle here and there is no fabric rose. If you wanted to make this model without the rose, I believe you could use this pattern for both the left and right fronts, with minor adjustments on the front pleats.

Finally a picture of the instruction steps that tell you how to construct the fabric rose:

I found these instructions insufficient because if this is all you do, the rose will fall due to its own weight; the rose needs some tacking around its edges so it remains open and flat (at least with this fabric). The fringed edge needs to curl to the outside of the rose too, it looks nicer like this.

See you next time!

The pattern adjustment for the rose does not look so difficult after all! Can't wait to see the finished jacket and I hope you get time to do the pants as well.

You're doing an amazing job. To me you picked the right fabric (Vogue patterns' explanations are sometimes insufficient ;o) and I can't wait to see the whole suit done.

Thanks for sharing the rose construction. I thought it would be more complicated. I didn't find this pattern on Vogue's site. Is it an out-of-print one?
Good luck with this great project.

Thank you all!

Tany, this is becoming such an exclusive jacket.
Thank you for the pictures of the pattern piece with the rose. I would never have imagined that it was constructed this way.

Paco

Wow this is very interesting! I'm very surprised to see that the flower part of the shoulder because how could you possibly clean the top? The flower would be crushed with modern dry cleaning.

Unless - and maybe I’m crazy - perhaps the flower is cut that way so that when the top is cleaned the flower can be picked apart, cleaned, pressed as a flat piece, and then re-formed and re-attached to the shoulder.

Some boning to the neckline will also add some structure for the heavy flower.

Phyllis I had the same thought when I first saw the pattern (I even bought the boning for applying if necessary) but when washing the fabric (it's a poly/lycra blend of some kind, with some stretch on it), found out that if I leave it to dry outdoors, hanging straight it barely needs ironing. So I think I can hand wash this jacket (just seeping it in tepid water with wool detergent and the washing away the detergent with more running tepid water) and leave it to dry on a hanger and the flower will keep its form!

As for the boning, I found out that it is not necessary because I attached the flower to the inside elastic casing that goes snug on the shoulders, so the flower weight doesn’t affect the jacket's front.
