Jaqueta Mrs Stylebook – Mrs Stylebook jacket

One of the goals that I set to myself in the beginning of this season was sewing a pattern from Mrs Stylebook. I couldn't get the Mrs Stylebook Fall issue yet so I decided to sew a model from the previous Summer issue: a blouse that I turned into a short sleeve jacket through the fabric choice and the full lining. The original model is this:
I chose this model for its pattern unusual shape; the pattern is drafted from a base pattern (also called sloper by some of you), which is drafted based on the personal measurements. This base pattern is first manipulated to meet with the final pattern basic structure. For this particular model, the manipulation of the base pattern corresponds to rotating the darts:
After achieving my base pattern with the darts correctly placed, I taped it to my cutting matt and taped a semi-transparent sheet of paper (the same I use for tracing my other patterns) on top, enabling the tracing of the final pattern guided by the basic pattern outline:
The first alteration (surprisingly) was shifting the shoulder seams to the front:
Then all there is to do is following the drawing in the magazine, figuring out the correct drafting order for each step:
Note the awkwardness of this pattern: the strange egg shaped torso, the raised collar, the slanted belt carriers on the back… These were all features that intrigued me and made me choose this pattern over other possible choices. Also note that this is a loose fitting garment, more loosely at the waist than chest and hips.

The sleeve pattern is also interesting:
The sleeve cap curves are drawn on top of straight lines that correspond to the measurement of the front armhole and the back armhole (note the symbols next to the letters AH and the same symbols at the armhole above); this results in a non eased sleeve cap.

Fabric: I chose a silver grey novelty fabric (poly based) with metal fibres (it looks shinier in the pictures because of the flash light) that is permanently wrinkled. This fabric is thicker and has more body than the wrinkled taffeta that I used on the cape. Inspiration for this model/fabric coordination came from the Fall/Winter 0708 Runway collections:

Gostei bastante do resultado e a jaqueta fez sucesso!
Conclusion: An original project that gave the means for me to try the Mrs Stylebook Japanese patternmaking techniques. I love the end result and I can say I had a lot of compliments when wearing it today! It's a trendy garment, very unusual for its stylelines and fabric, a little different from my usually more classical garments. I think this is actually a good thing because sometimes a girl needs something a little different in her wardrobe! It's also a great piece for layering! I hope that you like this jacket and also that it motivates those of you willing to try Mrs Stylebook's patterns! I had lots of fun (and hard work, LOL)!

Wow! This is an amazing jacket especially since you made in from a pattern in all Japanese. It is wonderful that you set a goal and met it! Will you make more items from the Mrs. Stylebook?

Wonderful! I can imagine the "hard work" thinking through the process of pattern drafting, then construction order. But what a stylish achievement.

I don't think I am up to Mrs Stylebook yet!

of course the outcomes are worth the efforts, otherwise i would have quit sewing from msb after the first garment ;)

Obrigada a todas pelo vosso apoio!
Thank you all for your kind comments!

Carolyn: Thanks! I'm sure this won't be the last model I make from MRB! I really enjoyed drafting the pattern myself!

Sismada: Obrigada!
Beijinhos e obrigada!

Madhatter: Thanks! I make myself the same question sometimes... I take every free moment I get to be sewing... I also neglect other important aspects im my life and then I feel terribly about it... But I love sewing so much...

Amazing results-I admire your willingness to take on the challenge and the skill demonstrated in the drafting & construction. I am a long, long way from Mrs Stylebook. Do you have another Mrs Stylebook project in mind?

Tany said...

Hi Theresa! Thank you! I don't have any other MSB project in mind in the near future; I'm holding until I get the Fall MSB issue and then I'll decide! This jacket (the original model is a blouse) is featured in the Summer issue.

How did you like the ease-less sleeve cap. I've been toying with redrafting sleeves to ditch the ease.

How's the fit, the sewing, the look?

Andrea

Tany, this garment is fantastic! Great fabric choice. I am continually impressed with your sewing skills.

Tany said...

Andrea: Hi! I like the way the sleeve is drafted with no ease (this doesn't happen in all MSB patterns); as a dropped shoulder sleeve I think the ease would be adding too much and the fabric I used doesn't ease well either. I'm happy with the fit; the collar needed some minor tweaking though, so my advise when making a MSB garment would be make a muslin first! Thank you for your visit!

You jacket is fabulous and so is your choice of fabric. Congratulations on your first MSB project!

Hi Tany,
it's great and inspiring that you get into patter-drafting. I just made my first steps with it - it's fun! Your jacket turned out perfect. I hope I'll be equally successful with my experiments ;) I admire your skills!

Tania, estou emocionada!!!

Boa sorte!

Olivia Claudia said...

ó sim. Agora percebi a caída do ombro.
Bjs e vou continuar tentando ;)
