Conjunto Preto: finalmente! – The Black Ensemble: finally!

Caras amigas, primeiro tenho que vos pedir desculpa pela demora (problemas de hardware, estive o fim-de-semana todo sem portátil e tive sorte em não ter perdido toda a informação do disco).
Dear sewing friends, first let me apologise for taking so long to write this review (hardware problems with my laptop caused this; I was without being able to connect during the whole weekend and I was lucky for saving all the data in the hard disk).

Agora, sem mais demora, o conjunto preto:
Without further delay, here it is:

Trata-se de um conjunto blusa-calção, de tafetá enrugado preto, pespontado a branco pérola, e a blusa tem umas tiras de amarrar de organza de seda, também pespontadas, além de uns bordados nas costuras verticais na frente. No total demorou cerca de 47 horas a fazer e deixou-me extensamente satisfeita com o resultado! As peças podem usar-se separadas para um look mais casual e funcionam muito bem juntas para um look mais sofisticado.
This is a matching blouse and shorts ensemble, made from wrinkled black taffeta with seashell white topstitching; the blouse has silk organza ties (also topstitched) and two embroidered seams on the front. It took about 47 hours to finish and I was very pleased with the final result! Both garments can be used separately for a more casual look or together for a sophisticated look.

Conclusão: um projecto desafiante e demorado mas que foi concluído com sucesso (na minha opinião). Gostei de costurar este conjunto e pude por à prova mais umas funcionalidades da minha máquina nova! A blusa não precisou de qualquer ajuste de prova, serviu à primeira e os calções também não levaram qualquer ajuste pois usei um molde que já tinha experimentado para fazer umas calças. O tecido que usei tem a desvantagem de modificar a sua textura quando entretelado com entretela termo-colante mas o problema pode ser contornado. Tive a oportunidade de usar neste projecto mais uma vez a organza de seda, tanto para fins decorativos como para a construção interna (forro das frentes dos calções, entretela das vistas e da gola da blusa, guarnição das cavas).
Conclusion: this was a defying and time-consuming project but all the time and effort paid in the end. I enjoyed sewing this black ensemble and having the chance to experiment a little more with my new sewing machine! The blouse pattern didn’t take any additional fitting adjustment, it fits wonderfully well and the city shorts were also a TNT pattern since I’ve used this pattern in the past with great results. The fabric was not suitable for fusing but that problem was easily overtaken. I had the opportunity to use silk organza once more, to only as decorative effect but as inner construction structure, using it as non-fusible interfacing, underlining and as binding for the armhole seams.

As vistas da cintura e as virolas dos calções – The waist facings and the turn-ups

Como já tinha explicado os calções não têm cós mas sim vistas (ou guarnições) na cintura (que são entreteladas); para costurar as vistas primeiro cosi as suas costuras dos lados (já sabem, passar a ferro de ambos os lados e depois abrir a ferro) e depois terminei as beiras que não são cosidas às calças com a corta-e-cose. Trabalha-se a casa de botão interna na vista direita (a vermelho no desenho). Em seguida é preciso coser as vistas às calças pela linha da cintura e para isso sobrepõe-se as calças e as vistas, direito contra direito, da forma ilustrada no desenho seguinte e cose-se:

As previously stated, the city shorts don't have a waist band but instead they have a waist facing (interfaced); to sew the waist facing first I stitch its side seams (press on both sides then press open, you know the drill) and then I serge the edges that are not to be stitched along the waistline. I also do the hidden buttonhole on the right facing (in red in the next drawing). The facing is then joined to the trousers as illustrated next (right sides facing each other and the center line SAs are folded back) and stitched along the waistline:

Depois de aparar e golpear os valores de costura na linha da cintura (também os abro a ferro), viram-se as vistas para dentro, alinhavam-se na cintura e nas orlas e pesponta-se; as costuras que não são pespontadas são fechadas com pontos à mão (no canto à beira do fecho e no centro da frente). Cose-se um botão chato no lado esquerdo da frente, sobre o trespasse do fecho. O aspecto final é o seguinte:
After trimming and clipping the waistline SAs (I also press them open), the facing is turned to the inside of the shorts and basted along the waistline edge and facing edges; after carefully pressing on the wrong side, I topstitch the facing following the basted lines as a guide. The center edges near the zipper opening are handstitched in place. There is also the inside flat button on the left side (on the fly-facing add-on). This is how it looks when finished:

Aqui podem ver que nas calças do Inverno passado, além do botão acrescentei dois colchetes. Nos calções não achei que fosse necessário.
You can see the closure detail on my previous pants; see that I used two hooks to better secure the lapped front in place (I found no need to do this in this case though):

Finalmente as virolas: nas calças que fiz anteriormente as virolas só estão cosidas dos lados porque o tecido vincado mantém a sua forma:

No caso dos calções, como o tecido é muito mais mole e não mantém tanto a forma, resolvi pespontar as virolas, prendendo-as com o pesponto:
For the city shorts the fabric is too soft for this and the turn-ups wouldn't keep their form, so I decided to topstitch them in place:

A costura do cós atrás - The back crotch seam

É muito importante que esta costura seja reforçada se quisermos evitar situações embaraçosas, principalmente com calças justas. Esta costura está sujeita a tracção pois cada vez que nos baixamos ou sentamos forçamos os pontos, que pelo facto desta zona ser cortada apanhando o tecido em viés, facilmente se partem pois o tecido dá de si.
It is extremely important to reinforce the back crotch seam if you want to avoid embarrassing situations (ripping), mainly when wearing tight pants. This seam is subject to a lot of stress when you sit or lean down; the curved section is cut bias-like so it’s due to stretch and the stitches may break.

Há várias coisas que podem fazer para reforçar esta costura; uma delas é fazerem duas linhas de pesponto, afastadas de 1mm, tendo o cuidado de esticar os panos das calças enquanto se cose; outra é coser juntamente na costura fita de algodão fininha na parte curva, para evitar que esta costura estique.
There are many things you can do to reinforce this seam; one of them is stitching it twice, keeping both stitching lines close to one another and sewing taut along the curved section; another common practice is to reinforce the curved section with narrow cotton tape, to keep it from stretching out.

Nestes calções resolvi usar um dos pontos que a minha máquina nova traz, especialmente para reforço das costuras do cós: o ponto triplo a máquina cose dois pontos para a frente e um para trás, resultando num ponto triplo como podem ver na figura seguinte, tirada do manual da máquina (é o ponto mais à esquerda):
In this case I decided to use one of the featured stitches in my new sewing machine, specially indicated for this purpose: the triple stitch. This is a stretch stitch; it makes two stitches forward and one stitch back, resulting in a very strong seam. You can see a drawing from my SM manual showing this stitch (it's the stitch on the left):

Outra coisa que fiz foi coser juntamente com a costura do cós a ourela da organza que aproveitei especialmente para situações como esta; a organza de seda por si só já é forte no sentido do correr do fio e a sua ourela (o remate dos lados da peça de tecido) muito mais forte é.
Besides using the triple stitch I also reinforced the back crotch seam using silk organza selvage that I saved for this purpose. This will prevent the back crotch seam from stretching and make it even stronger.Os calções já estão prontos desde a semana passada mas não tenho tido muito tempo para actualizar o blog; da próxima vez vou mostrar-vos como ficou o cós e também o pormenor das beiras da bainha; entretanto já terminei um top em bordado Inglês e comecei outro vestido (mais tarde falarei sobre isso)! Fecho com carcela (Parte 2) - Fly front zipper (Part 2)

O fecho deve ser alinhavado ao lado esquerdo de forma que os seus dentes fiquem rentes à dobra no trespasse e depois cosido rente com a ajuda do pé calcador especial; o início do fecho (em cima) deve coincidir com a marca existente:

The zipper is basted to the left side so that the coil is next to the fold, and then stitched by machine with the special purpose presser feet for zippers; the beginning of the zipper should match the mark on the center line:

Em seguida prega-se a abertura com alfinetes, no lado direito, meio sobre o meio:
Next the opening is pinned on the right side so that both center lines match:

Do lado do avesso alinhava-se e cose-se a fita (nastro) do fecho à parte direita do trespasse, com cuidado para não apanhar o outro lado da abertura. Deve-se estender as calças numa superfície plana para que o fecho fique perfeitamente alinhado. As partes em tecido por baixo devem estar bem estendidas. A linha vermelha na foto indica onde cosi:
On the wrong side, the zipper tape is basted to the right fly extension ONLY. The pants should be lying perfectly flat when you baste the zipper in place. Machine stitch the zipper to the fly extension; the red line in the picture indicates the stitched line:
Agora do lado direito faz-se o pesponto pela linha marcada, prendendo a guarnição direita por baixo; junto ao gancho reforça-se a costura com pontos ziguezague apertados e estreitos, para reforço:
On the right side, the opening is topstitched next to the basting line (it serves as a guide), together with the fly extension underneath; start from the top and finish with a narrow satin stitch (for reinforcement) when you approach the front crouch seam:

Agora vou executar o trespasse interior; o molde para o trespasse é incluído na revista, basta reforçar o rectângulo de tecido correspondente ao trespasse com entretela, dobrá-lo no sentido do comprimento com o avesso para fora e fechar a extremidade superior (isto é necessário porque não temos cós e o trespasse vai prolongar a linha da cintura em cima) e a inferior em redondo; cortam-se os valores de costura rente e se necessário golpeiam-se:
Now it's time to sew the fly-facing add-on; the pattern for this is given so all you need to do is interface the fabric rectangle for the facing, fold it lengthwise with the wrong side facing out and stitch the extremities (the upper side corresponds to the waistline and needs to be finished because there is no waistband, so this facing extends the waist line; the opposite side is stitched round). Trim and clip the SAs.

Vira-se o trespasse para o direito (não se esqueçam de ir passando a ferro e assentado cada costura que fazem) e remata-se a sua orla vertical com a corta-e-cose; alinhava-se este trespasse à guarnição esquerda e cose-se, prendendo apenas a guarnição e o trespasse:
Turn the fly-facing add-on to the right side (press as you go, don't forget this; each stitched seam needs pressing) and finish the side raw edge with the serger. Baste the facing to the left fly extension ONLY and machine stitch:

Finalmente dou uns pontos à mão para fixar a parte redonda do trespasse à guarnição:
Finally, I like to slipstitch the fly-facing extension at the bottom (rounded edge) to the fly extension:

O fecho está pronto! Falta terminar a costura do gancho (tem um truque, explico no próximo post), colocar as vistas da cintura (vou explicar como se faz e mostrar o resultado final porque não pude tirar fotos), fazer as dobras em baixo e fica feito!
The fly-front zipper is finished! Next I will stitch the crotch seam all the way to the waist on the back (there's a little trick there), sew the waist facings (I'll explain how this is done and show you the final results; I couldn't take pictures of the process though), make the turn-ups (leg cuffs) and it's done!

Fecho com carcela (parte 1) – Fly front zipper (Part 1)

Olá Amigas! Prosseguindo a confecção dos calções, chegou a altura de costurar o fecho com carcela; como tudo na costura, há várias maneiras de se costurar um fecho deste tipo; na minha colecção de livros de costura encontro vários métodos, todos com o mesmo fim.
Hi sewing Friends! Proceeding with the making of the city shorts, it's time to sew the fly front zipper; like most things in sewing, there are many different methods for sewing a fly front zipper; I own many books and every one of them teaches a slightly different approach.

O método que vou aplicar e tentar explicar é o método da Burda; lembro-me da primeira vez que o pus em prática, devia ter uns 12 anos: fiz uns calções brancos com um tecido de lençol que a minha mãe tinha guardado e a carcela ficou um bocado torta; além disso não tinha trespasse interior (uma parte em tecido que cobre os dentes do fecho por dentro). Desde aí continuei a usar este método e a aperfeiçoar a técnica cada vez que a aplicava; os passos que sigo são semelhantes aos explicados nas instruções da Burda, exceptuando alguns pequenos detalhes.
The method I'm using is based on the BWOF method and I will try to explain you how I do it. I remember the first time I used this method (following BWOF's instructions): I was about 12 and I made a pair of white shorts from a bed sheet piece of fabric that my mother had stored away in the house. I didn't sew a fly facing add-on and the front topstitching wasn't that straight; also the zipper was gapping on the bottom but it didn't matter that much to me at the time because I wore those shorts for many years! Since then I practised a lot and my results become better. My way of doing the fly zipper insertion is based on the BWOF instructions but with a slight twist. That has to do with my personal preference and experience only.

Para começar, as costuras das pernas devem estar terminadas (ver último post sobre os calções aqui). As frentes destas calças, incluindo os trespasses da carcela, estão forradas com a organza de seda, por isso não preciso de entretelar os trespasses. Os valores de costura dos trespasses e da costura do gancho estão chuleados (no caso dos valores de costura do gancho chuleei com ponto de ziguezague e nos trespasses usei a corta-e-cose).
Before I start, the legs must be ready (darts, pockets, side seams) – see my last post on the city shorts here. In this case the fronts are underlined with silk organza so there is no need to interface the fly extension but you should do this otherwise. The fly extension SAs are serged and the other raw edges (curved) are zigzagged.

Tendo uma perna virada do avesso e outra virada do direito, enfio esta última por dentro da perna que está do avesso, alinhando a costura do gancho da frente (por baixo do fecho), direito contra direito e cosendo esta costura, desde o meio das pernas até o sinal de abertura do fecho (vejam as marcas vermelhas):

Starting with one of the legs on the wrong side I put the other leg inside this one, pinning the front crotch curve (right sides together) from the zipper opening mark to the inner leg crotch point; I machine stitch this seam (see the red markings in the picture), extending it a little furter to the inner leg crotch point:

O fecho das calças de senhora fecha da direita para a esquerda. A beira do lado direito (trespasse) é virada para dentro pela linha do meio (é o lado que tem o desenho da carcela alinhavado) e o outro lado também é virado para dentro mas deve ter um pequeno trespasse, ou seja a dobra é feita a ½ a ¾ de cm da linha do meio; é preciso golpear o valor de costura do gancho na parte esquerda junto ao trespasse para que a costura do gancho possa ser assente com os valores de costura abertos. Alinhavar as dobras e assentá-las a ferro:
On women's trousers the zipper opening laps from right to the left; the fly extension on the right should fold to the inside by the center line (the right side is the one with the basting lines for the topstitching); the left side is a little extended so it folds about 1/4 inches away from the center line; baste and press, clipping the left side crouch curve SA next to the fly extension:

O tamanho de fecho indicado para estas calças é de 10cm e o tamanho mais pequeno que encontrei à venda é de 12, por isso vou ter de encurtar o fecho:

The pattern calls for a 4 inch zipper but all I could find was a 4 ½, so I must shorten the zipper:

Para isso marco 10cm no seu comprimento e faço um ponto de ziguezague com comprimento 0 e largura suficiente para englobar os dentes do fecho nessa marca; depois só tenho que cortar o fecho 1,5cm abaixo desta marca com a tesoura de ziguezague. Na figura seguinte podem ver o fecho aplicado nas calças que fiz anteriormente; podem ver que o fecho não vai até cima e que, embora estas calças não tenham cós mas sim uma vista por dentro, o fecho termina na linha da vista:
For shortening the zipper I set the SM for a zero length zigzag stitch, wide enough to embrace the zipper teeth, and I zigzag the zipper at the correct length; then I use my pinking shears to cut the zipper ½ an inch from this mark. In the next picture you can see the zipper on my previously made trousers; these trousers have no waist band but instead have waist facings; see how the zipper ends at the facing line:

Os calções: vincos e costuras - The city shorts: creases and seams

Depois de acabar a blusa resolvi começar os calções do conjunto preto; a primeira coisa a fazer é as pinças atrás (vejam aqui algumas dicas de como se deve costurar as pinças) e, em seguida, o vinco nas partes da frente (para fazer o vinco deve-se dobrar as partes da frente pela linha do vinco - direito para fora - e com um movimento de pousar-levantar o ferro, marcar bem o vinco numa linha contínua):
After the blouse is finished it's time to sew the city shorts; first thing is sewing the darts (see here for tips on sewing darts) on the back and then make the creases on the front panels (fold the front garment piece along the marked crease line, rigth side to the outside and use a press-and-lift motion with the iron):

Só depois se cose a prega nos panos da frente das calças (a costura da prega termina onde começa o vinco):
After the creases are done I sew the front pleats (the seam stops where the crease begins):

Tendo as partes da frente e de trás preparadas, temos que fazer as costuras laterais e as do interior das pernas; começo com as laterais porque pretendo pespontá-las com a linha branca. Depois de coser as costuras, cosi com a corta-e-cose os valores de costura juntos, para depois os assentar a ferro na direcção dos panos de trás. A costura da anca é redonda e deve ser assente com a ajuda de uma superfície curva. Podem ver que o banco de alfaiate é muito útil para este tipo de costuras; o presunto de alfaiate também serve, mas demora mais tempo pois é preciso movê-lo várias vezes ao longo da costura.
After the front and back panels are ready it's time to sew the side and inner leg seams; I start by sewing the side seams because I want to topstitch them. After stitching the side seams I serge the SAs together and press them to the back. The seam is round on the hips so once more my presser buck becomes very useful. If you don't have a presser buck you can use a tailor ham or the round corner of the pressing table. The presser buck makes the pressing easier and quicker because you are able to do it without repositioning the fabric.


A costura é pespontada com linha Madeira branca na agulha e com linha preta Alterfil na canela. Se guiarem a costura pelo centro do pé calcador e posicionarem a agulha para a esquerda, obtêm uma costura mais direita (no caso de pespontos nas beiras podem alinhar a beira com o lado direito do pé calcador e mover a agulha para a posição mais à direita). Para pespontar utilizo um comprimento do ponto um pouco maior que para coser; neste caso, para coser utilizo o comprimento 2 e para pespontar o 2.5. Poderia usar um ponto maior se o tecido não fosse tão fino.
I topstitched the side seams using the white Madeira thread on the needle and black Alterfil on the bobbin. For topstitching I use a stitch length slightly bigger than what I use for seaming (for seaming this fabric I'm using length 2 and for topstitching I'm using 2.5 but I could use a higher setting if the fabric wasn't so sheer and the Madeira thread so thin). See how I align the seam with the center slit on the presser foot and set the needle to the left position so I can achieve better precision in this case (if I was topstitching an edge - like the collar/lapels/front edge - I would align the edge with the right side of the foot and move the needle to it's rightmost position):

As costuras do meio são assentes abertas (com a ajuda de um “chouriço” de passar a ferro) ; no meu caso estou a usar um fio mto fino na corta-e-cose, o Serafil, por isso posso primeiro aparar e acabar os valores de costura com a corta-e-cose, coser as costuras e depois abri-las a ferro; se usarem um fio normal na corta-e-cose só devem abrir as costuras a ferro depois de estarem abertas a ferro (senão o tecido pode ficar marcado ao passar). Podem ver também a organza que forra as partes da frente:
The inner seams are pressed open; I'm using Serafil thread on my serger so I can serge the SAs first, then stitch the seam and for last press it open using a pressing roll). If you are using regular serger thread (thicker thread), you should serge the SAs after the seams are pressed open so you can avoid imprinting the fabric. Notice the organza layer on the front:

Bem, talvez não; enganei-me a marcar a carcela (está marcada como se fosse para calças de homem, para mulher é do outro lado); é fácil de corrigir ANTES de começar a coser o fecho, lol. É preciso estar atenta a estes pormenores!
Well, maybe not; I made a mistake and thread traced the fronts as if it was for men's trousers… We ladies wear the opening on the other side (it should lap right over left), lol! This is not difficult to correct since I didn't start to sew the zipper on, so no harm done. These things happen so better check on everything before you start to sew!

Como no meu último post estava já mais que passada a minha hora de dormir, não mostrei alguns dos detalhes que merecem ser vistos nesta blusa. Em relação às fotos, algumas ficaram ligeiramente tremidas porque a minha bateria estava baixa e a partir de determinada altura só consegui tirar fotos sem flash.
When I was writing my last post, I was way past my bed time and so I skipped some important details on this blouse. Again, forgive me for the blurriness on some pictures; this time my battery was low and I couldn't use the flash on the last few photos.

A beira da vista da frente foi acabada com a corta-e-cose, virada para dentro e pespontada com a linha pérola; depois de aplicar a vista, a beira foi cosida à costura da frente (a que tem as flores do lado direito) com uns pontos à mão soltos:

The facing edge was serged, turned inside and topstitched; after sewing the facing in place and finishing the inside of the buttonholes, the edge was stitched by hand to the front vertical seam (the one with the flowers), using hemming loose stitches:

Aqui têm como ficou a vista nos ombros (foi cosida apenas aos valores de costura dos ombros):
This is the finishing of the facing on the shoulder area (it is stitched to the shoulder SA only):

Outro detalhe digno de nota é o acabamento do decote/gola nas costas; podem ver na figura o avesso da blusa, onde os valores de costura da gola e do decote foram aparados, golpeados e virados para cima (para dentro da gola), tendo a costura sido acabada com pontos à mão. Este é um método diferente do que usei na blusa de organza vermelha (onde rematei esta costura com uma tira de viés dobrada).
Another detail is the finishing of the collar on the back neckline; see the wrong side in the picture: the SAs were trimmed and clipped, then pressed to the inside of the collar; the final seam was handstitched. I used a different approach for the red organza blouse (I used a folded bias organza tape to finish the raw edge, instead).

Para aplicar a gola usei o mesmo método que descrevi no casaco Orwell aqui e aqui; como as golas da camisa são semelhantes às de um fato, pude usar o mesmo método sem problemas.

For the collar and lapels I followed the same method as for the Orwell Coat (click here and here). Although this is a blouse, the collar is the same kind (in fact I was unsure if I was to call this a blouse or a jacket…).

A cava foi rematada com fita de viés dobrada. Esta fita é de organza 100% seda e o único sítio onde a encontro é numa retrosaria cá em Aveiro, onde só têm disponíveis as cores branco e marfim. Sei que o fornecedor é Espanhol e se alguém souber onde posso encomendar/comprar mais cores desta fita (não é fita de organza normal; é cortada em viés e tem ambas as beiras vincadas para dentro), por favor entre em contacto comigo. Tentei pedir mais cores na retrosaria mas não me deram qualquer garantia que as arranjassem.
I used pre-folded organza bias tape for finishing the armhole raw edges; this is 100% silk organza folded bias tape and the only place I could find it on sale was in my favorite local notions store. They have it only in white and ivory so if someone knows where I can order/buy other colors for this kind of tape, please let me know. I tried to order more colors from my local notions store and I didn't get any feedback from them. I know for a fact that they get it from a Spanish supplier though.

Ainda relativamente à posição das casas no molde original, cheguei a uma conclusão diferente do que tinha referido aqui. As casas estão bem marcadas, o que está incorrectamente identificado é o meio da frente. Cheguei a esta conclusão quando vesti a blusa antes de colocar as vistas e trabalhar as casas; depois confirmei com a fita métrica que o meio da frente não é a linha vertical marcada no molde; a linha do meio simplesmente não está assinalada e fica algures entre a linha vertical e a beira e é ao longo desta linha "imaginária" que se devem coser os botões .
Still on the subject of buttonhole placement, I found out that my first assumption (that the buttonholes were incorrectly marked) was wrong; I came into this conclusion because when I tried the blouse on (before sewing the buttonholes) if the CF was the vertical line on the pattern, the blouse would be too tight on the chest; so I moved the buttonholes to their original position and concluded that the CF line WAS NOT the vertical line on the pattern (identified there clearly as the center front); the SF line is somewhere between this line and the edge; I confirmed this with my tape measure, of course, and the buttons were placed on this line and not on the marked vertical line on the pattern.

Ultimamente tenho andado extremamente ocupada, por isso perdoem-me a falta de assiduidade, tanto a escrever aqui como a visitar-vos nos vossos blogs. Apesar do cansaço e de outras circunstâncias da vida que me impedem de passar tanto tempo como gostaria neste meu passatempo, consegui acabar a blusa. Já é um bocadinho tarde (3a.m.), por isso vou limitar-me a mostrar alguns detalhes.
Lately I've been extremely busy, so forgive me for my lack of posting and for not being able to catch up with most of you. In spite of the lack of time and other circumstances, I was able to finish the blouse; it’s late (3a.m.) so I’ll keep my description short.

Uma florzinha na manga ajuda a manter a bainha no sítio:
