Adjusting the feeding mechanism on mechanical drop-feed single-needle flat-bed lockstitch sewing machines

EN Summary: To understand and set-up the fabric feeding mechanism (which is responsible for moving the feed dogs coordinated with the needle) we literally need to "look under the hood" (under the bed of the sewing machine). Disable ad-blocker and reload if blog content doesn't show.

Adjusting the thread feed mechanism on an Industrial lockstitch sewing machine– Ajuste da alimentação da linha na máquina industrial de ponto preso

EN Summary: The amount of adjustments that can be made into a lockstitch sewing machine is surprising; in spite of doing just one single stitch (the lockstitch) this sewing machine offers a lot more of “play” when compared to the domestic sewing machines. Keep reading to find out more!

Stalking my sewing-self in the nineties: what has changed? – Part 1

EN Summary: Those of us with longer sewing journeys can’t avoid the nostalgia when looking back at some of the sewing we used to do more than 20 years ago. Last week I decided to start a “new” project: a remake of a pant suit I made back in the late nineties and couldn’t help myself comparing my process from back then with the present. This article is part of a reflection about my sewing journey while I describe the making of the pant suit: where I came from & where I am now. Keep reading the full article.

Continuem a ler o artigo completo.

Marfy 2268 weekend status report: let the hand-stitching begin – Passamos agora a coser à mão

EN Summary: As far as machine stitching is required, the coat is completed. During the weekend I was able to finish the inner shell, attach it to the outer shell and top-stitch along the collar seam, front and collar edges. I also got a second sewing machine to function as a backup to my Pfaff Ambition Essential and I am sharing my first impressions about this machine, since I’ve used it to perform all these tasks on the coat.

EN Summary: A serged (overlocked) rolled hem is a very narrow edging stitch, more or less dense, usually involving three threads (right-most over-edge needle, upper-looper and lower-looper) where one of the looper threads wraps around the cut edge folding it along the hem while encasing it. Keep reading to know more and to see how I configured my serger to perform this stitch.

EN Summary: The 2-Thread Overedge Stitch uses only two threads, one on the needle (typically the right overedge needle for a narrower stitch) and the lower looper thread (light blue and turquoise blue, respectively). The upper looper is working as a spreader (not threaded). It's a stitch suitable for overedging (not seaming) sheer to medium weight fabrics. It's both economical (only two threads) and non-bulky. Keep reading for the full article.
---

EN Summary: In this episode of the Serger Files I am addressing the 5-thread Safety Stitch  on my Singer 14T957DC (it's been said that this is one of the most challenging stitches); I believe the principles described apply to most of the 5-thread sergers/overlockers for domestic use so even if you don't own this specific model it's probable that you'll still find some useful information. Na minha caixa do correio – In my mailbox

Português
English (uncheck the other box and check this one)

Fiquem bem!
Dear readers, today’s entry is dedicated to thank all the fabulous gifts I’ve been receiving from all over the world. I feel truly blessed! I’ll show you some of the treasures, by the order they arrived in my mailbox.

It’s not the first time that
Laura (from Romania) and me exchange gifts and sewing notions; this time I asked Laura to get me a silver chain, hoping to use it in the Unrath&Strano suit. Along with the chain Laura sent me this fabulous mother of pearl necklace that is the perfect match for a pair of earrings I already own:

Some of you already know that I and Laura share the love for mother of pearl accessories and buttons; Laura also sent me these gorgeous vintage mother of pearl buttons and this lovely vintage lace:

I already have a model in mind for the larger buttons: this jacket is featured in the March BWOF; I have less one button but I think I can figure out a solution!
From Joana (Chuana’s Tricot n' Stuff , this time from Portugal) I got these lovely gifts won at her blog's drawing contest:
Some time ago I asked Els (The Sewing Diva from Holand) the big favour of buying me some hard to find notions. Knowing that I love the color red, she also sent me this GORGEOUS burn-out knit fabric! It’s truly divine:
I also have plans for this fabric; a variation of this top featured in the February BWOF:
From Adrienne (USA) I received these Vogue patterns and this FABULOUS postcard! Wow! I will keep this postcard as a token of your friendship, my friend!
And these came in today:
Lisa (USA) sent me her prototype of a RTW shoulder pad, along with its pattern, detailed assembling instructions AND this GREAT chalk marker! How cool is this?
If you want to know more about these shoulder pads, you can read Lisa’s excellent blog entry: Anatomy of a RTW shoulder pad.
Paco (Barcelona) took my breath away when he offered me the pattern for this fabulous creation of his: a magnificent red silk jacket. Together with the pattern I also found the samples of the fabrics (silk, underlining and lining) and the patterns for the custom made raglan shoulder pads!

Finally, after searching almost everywhere, I was able to get my needle board for pressing velvet, all thanks to Summerset (USA) that was so kind to order it and mail it out for me! I also found another lovely postcard inside, showing a landscape of the place where Summerset lives!
Am I or am I not a lucky girl? My deepest thanks to all of you! Your friendship is my biggest treasure!

On the sewing front: my “The Devil Wears Prada” suit is coming along slowly but nicely (I’ve been overloaded with work, for a change) and I expect to post some progress pictures really soon (maybe today!). I lost all hope of completing all the garments in my Fall Winter project list because spring sewing is starting to appeal to me. Some projects will have to be postponed until next fall, I’m afraid.
On the knitting front: well, progress has been even slower… I am knitting an elbow length version of the Fetching mittens for my friend Isabelle and at this pace I fear she will only get to wear them next fall! But I won’t start another knitting project until this one is finished and I’m putting all my love into it! See you soon, everybody!

Passar a ferro durante a confecção – Press as you go

Português
English (uncheck the other box and check this one)

The pressing techniques and the good use of proper pressing tools, together with the ”press as you go” principle are as important as the knowledge of the best sewing techniques, the right choice of fabric and the use of the best sewing notions. There are several pressing tools (though I must say that the only one I found available locally was a pressing mitt, so most of my pressing tools were either ordered from abroad or received as gifts from my sewing friends all over the world).

The wool crepe requires extra care when pressing because it’s quite easy to obtain an imprint on the right side while pressing over the seam allowances or hem allowances on the wrong side. Following Els’ suggestion, I didn’t serge finish the seam allowances, leaving them as raw edges; this will lessen the chances of the seam allowances showing on the right side. All the inner construction details will be hidden by the lining so no need to worry about these raw edges. I also used strips of brown paper while pressing the seams open, to avoid imprints on the right side. All the curved seams should be pressed on a round surface, like a tailor/dressmaker ham:

A pressing buck is also a useful tool to have around. This one is a genuine antique!

A seam roll also avoids the seam allowances to cause imprints because its cylindrical surface makes the iron to touch only the surface closer to the stitching line:
When I was sewing the collar and lapels on the jacket I had the chance of trying out Cidell’s gift, which is ideal for pressing open the lapel seams before grading them:

Any time you need to press over a temporarily basted line you should use the thinner thread possible for hand basting (either silk thread or thin machine embroidery thread). In the next picture you can observe the collar and lapels tailor basted (diagonal basting stitches) in place for edge pressing, so the outer layer “embraces” the inner layer, hiding the seam line underneath:

To reduce bulk and make the seams edges really flat, the use of a clapper is necessary. The clapper is used right after steam pressing the surface either by pounding on it or by using for exerting pressure on top of the surface to be flatten until the fabric cools down and dries completely:

Next I’m planning on writing an article (with Paco’s collaboration) showing you some of the different kinds of tailor shoulder pads I received from Paco, so stay tuned!
