O decote redondo com pregas, o debruado em viés nas mangas curtas, os bolsos metidos nas costuras e o franzido elástico na bainha dão a este vestido um toque único e contemporâneo!
A new look for the Little Black Dress through this fashion-forward model made in black wrinkled taffeta! The round neckline is lovely with its pleats, the short sleeves and armholes are binded with bias strips; the skirt has in-seam pockets and the hem is gathered using elastic tape.

As you can see from the pictures below, the designer Giorgio Armani opted for this style on many of his Fall2007 runaway garments (all pictures from www.style.com ):
Material - Notions:Tafetá engelhado preto, retalho de tecido ao xadrez “príncipe de gales”, fecho de 65cm, elástico de 1cm de largura, linha Alterfil preta, linhas Serafil para a corta-e-cose (ultimamente prefiro estas linhas para os trabalhos com tecidos finos por serem tão finas que não criam volume nas costuras), forro de cetim preto.
Black wrinkled taffeta, remnant of glen check fabric, 26inch invisible zipper, elastic tape (3/8inch wide) , black Alterfil thread for seaming, Serafil thread for the serger (I use the Serafil thread whenever I’m using thin/sheer fabric because this thread doesn’t add bulk to the seam) and black satin for the lining.

Além do meu livro básico de costura da Burda (confecção de bolsos metidos na costura) recorri a este artigo do Blog Pins and Needles; a Summerset fez um excelente trabalho ao costurar este vestido e as dicas dela (forrar as mangas e acabamento das cavas por dentro do vestido, entretelar as entradas dos bolsos metidos, acabamento das tiras de viés nas mangas) foram extremamente úteis!
Besides my basic sewing book from Burda (I used the instructions for the in-seam pockets but basically these instructions are similar to the BWOF's, yet illustrated with line drawings), I referred to Summerset's blog entry for her version of the bubble dress. She made an excellent flawless job on this model and shared a few very valuable tips (lining the sleeves, armhole finish technique, hand made finish on the bounded sleeve/armhole, interfacing the pocket openings).
Modificações ao modelo original – Alterations to the original model:
O molde não sofreu qualquer alteração; em vez de usar o tafetá para debruar as mangas e as cavas, utilizei o tecido em xadrez; forrei as mangas, fiz o acabamento das cavas e o remate das fitas de viés seguindo as dicas da Summerset para este modelo.
I didn't make any alteration to the pattern but I changed the armhole/sleeve binding: instead of using self fabric bias strips I used glen check bias strips for the binding. I also followed Summerset's tips for the construction process.

As pregas no decote (depois de completo o forro é cosido ao decote do vestido, os valores de costura são aparados e assentes na direcção do forro para depois serem pespontados rente à costura, do lado do forro; assim evita-se que o forro “role” para fora):
The neckline pleats (the completed lining - except for the sleeve lining – is pinned to the dress, right sides together and stitched along the neckline; the SAs are trimmed, graded and clipped on the round edges, pressed towards the lining and understitched. This avoids the lining rolling out and being visible on the right side):

O acabamento do debruado é inteiramente cosido à mão por dentro; o forro das mangas é cosido juntamente com as mangas ao vestido e os valores de costura são assentes para dentro, na cava; depois o forro do vestido é cosido à mão sobre esta costura.The binding is fell-stitched on the wrong side; the sleeve lining is placed together with the sleeve before making the binding and the sleeve/lining is treated as one and sewn to the dress armhole. The SAs are pressed towards the dress and the lining dress is sewn to the armhole by hand, on the inside.

O forro é cosido à mão ao fecho, por dentro; mas antes de fazer isto é necessário efectuar a bainha do vestido. Para fazer a bainha, mete-se a mão entre o vestido e o forro, passando-a pela abertura do fecho no forro e puxa-se a orla da bainha do forro e e do vestido para fora por essa abertura; juntando as orlas direito contra direito, cose-se duas linhas de pesponto para depois enfiar o elástico. Depois de terminar esta operação, passa-se de novo a bainha para dentro do vestido pela abertura do fecho no forro e, finalmente, cose-se à mão a abertura do forro ao fecho. O vestido fica assim completamente forrado, sem qualquer calor de costura à vista. Apesar deste facto, fiz o acabamento de todos os valores de costura com a corta-e-cose, isto porque quando se deixar de usar os vestidos balão posso transformar este vestido num simples evasé, bastando desmanchar a bainha, retirando o franzido e embainhar o vestido e o forro separadamente.The lining is hand-sewn to the zipper tapes but before I do this procedure I must finish hemming the dress. I reach inside the dress through the lining zipper opening, between the lining and the dress and I pull both lining and dress hem edges to the outside; I pin these two edges together, right sides facing each other and stitch along the hem line; I make another parallel stitching line for the elastic tape casing and I insert the elastic tape, stitching both ends by hand; I hand finish the little opening (I unstitched one of the vertical side seams on the lining casing) and the elastic tape stays encased. I slide the dress/lining hem through the lining zipper opening back to the inside and now I can handstitch the lining zipper opening to the zipper tape. The dress is now fully lined and no SAs are visible so there is no need to serge-finish the SAs inside; I serged them anyway because later I can transform this dress into an A-line dress if I want to (all it takes is removing the elastic and unstitching the hem, then hem the dress and the lining separately).

Além do franzido causado pelo elástico, os painéis laterais do vestido são mais largos que os painéis laterais do forro, pelo que antes de fazer a bainha os painéis laterais do vestido têm de ser franzidos na bainha para ficarem com o tamanho dos painéis em forro e as costuras verticais coincidirem exactamente no forro e no vestido.Besides the gathering effect caused by the elasticized hem, the dress side panels must also be eased into the lining side panels so the vertical seams match on both thee dress and lining.
Conclusão: Um vestido óptimo para usar na transição entre o Verão e o Outono ou mesmo no Outono, pois usam-se imenso as sobreposições e penso que não ficaria mal com uma camisola de lycra de gola alta por baixo! Pode ser usado com sapatos altos e meias sem pés, por exemplo, com botas de cano alto ou com botins (a grande tendência desta estação!). Neste momento estou a trabalhar na capa a condizer, onde também vou dar uns toques com o tecido em xadrez! Apesar de o look balão ser um pouco arrojado, adoro este vestido e espero que vocês também gostem!
Conclusion: A really nice and trendy dress, ideal for the Summer/Fall transition period; it can be worn single or with a lycra turtleneck when it gets colder (layering is still in for Fall). At this point I'm working on the matching cape and I'm also using the wrinkled taffeta ant the glen checks. In spite of the bubble skirt style being considered a little too fashion-forward, I really like this dress and I think it looks good on me! I hope you like it too!
