Chumaços de alfaiate – Tailor shoulder pads

Caros leitores, depois de uma ausência devida a assuntos familiares que tiveram precedência sobre a costura e este blog, mantenho o prometido e vou mostrar os chumaços de alfaiate que o Paco tão simpaticamente me enviou. Além disso o Paco forneceu-me uns desenhos que ajudam a ilustrar a correcta colocação dos chumaços, e tenho que agradecer duplamente por isso.

Confesso que tudo isto é novo para mim (excepto por algumas fotos em livros) e que localmente não encontrei nada que se pareça com estes chumaços. Mais uma vez a minha razão diz que se houvesse mais procura, se mais pessoas costurassem e procurassem estes materiais, seria diferente. Sinto que uma arte maravilhosa se está a perder e este blog é a minha contribuição para alterar o estado das coisas.

Passemos então para os chumaços. Os que vulgarmente encontro localmente à venda são feitos de espuma (tipo “esponja”) e os melhorezinhos são forrados a preto ou a branco. Como vou mostrar a seguir, os chumaços usados em alta confecção e alfaiataria são bastante diferentes. Comecemos pelos modelos de chumaços de alfaiate “normais”, ou mais parecidos com os que conhecemos:

Estes chumaços são feitos de camadas sobrepostas de uma espécie de material de empastar de algodão e existem em diferentes tamanhos e alturas de ombro. Deve-lhes ser dada a forma do ombro moldando-os e dando uns pontos corridos com alinhavos, segurando todas as camadas na forma desejada. A última foto mostra um tipo com suplemento de espuma, mais usado em casacos compridos. Podem ver a seguir um modelo próprio para jaquetas ligeiras que já vem com estes pontos, como exemplo:

Este tipo de chumaços é colocado de forma a ultrapassar o ombro cerca de 1 a 1.5cm, dependendo do tecido e do efeito desejado (ver esquema seguinte):

Para coser os chumaços, prendo-os com uns pontos corridos ao longo dos valores de costura dos ombros e também prendo com uns pontos à mão as suas extremidades aos valores de costura da cava.

Uma variação destes chumaços, contém uma camada de entretela grossa para uns ombros mais rectos e definidos:

Outro tipo de chumaços, tem um desconto nas costas para um cair mais solto nas costas e é normalmente utilizado em jaquetas e casacos de senhora:

Este tipo também pode ser usado em mangas de alfaiate normais, para copiar as famosas mangas Armani; para esse propósito deve-se diminuir o comprimento do ombro (pois o chumaço deve sair um pouco mais para fora, para dar um efeito redondo) e garantir também que a linha do ombro na jaqueta acompanha a linha natural do ombro, para um cair mais natural:

As costuras que unem a cabeça da manga à cava são abertas a ferro 8cm para cada lado do ombro, à semelhança do que é explicado neste artigo online da Threads:

Dear readers, after a forced absence due to pending family business, let’s get back to our sewing adventures showing you, as promised, the tailor shoulder pads Paco so kindly sent me from Barcelona. Not only he sent me these shoulder pads, he also contributed to this article by assembling a set of schematics illustrating their correct placement on a jacket, so we must thank him in double for this!

I have to confess that up to the point where I received these notions, all of them were unknown to me (except for a few photos in tailoring books) and I haven’t been able to find any of these shoulder pads on sale locally. Once more my reason states that if there were more of us sewing enthusiasts and professionals demanding for these notions, they would be easier to find around. I feel that a wonderful art is being lost and this blog is my small contribution for altering the state of things.

Let’s move on to the shoulder pads then. The ones I find on sale locally are made entirely of foam and the “best ones” are lined either in black or white. None of these common shoulder pads is a match to the real tailoring shoulder pads that I will show next. Let’s start by the common tailoring type:

All these shoulder pads are made of several cotton bating layers, and they are available in different sizes and shoulder heights. The previous photo shows a shoulder pad with a foam supplement for added height, commonly used for heavy coats. These shoulder pads should be shaped to the shoulder by making a few long running stitches that will hold the layers together on the desired shape. Next there a kind used for lightweight jackets that comes with these stitches already:

All these are placed on the shoulder so they extend it by 3/8” to ½”, depending on the fabric and style (see following schematic):

I stitch these pads in place by making a row of running stitches on the shoulder’s SAs (on each side) catching the pad underneath and also securing the shoulder pad’s ends to the armhole SAs.

This variation contains a layer of stiff interfacing and is used for obtaining a more defined shoulder line:

Another type is cropped on the back side and provides a loose fit on the back; they are normally used for ladies’ jackets and coats:

For last there is the raglan shoulder pad:

This kind can also be used on tailored set-in sleeves, to mimic the famous Armani style sleeve caps; for this purpose the pattern should be altered so the shoulder is shorter (the shoulder pad extends far out from the shoulder this time, for a rounded effect) and follows the body’s natural scope:

The SAs that join the sleeve to the armhole are pressed open for 3” on either direction from the shoulder point, just like explained in this Threads article:

Paco says that these are not the only available models, just those that he could easily get, but I think these are enough to get you started!
