Now for my next project: last year I made a red organza blouse with bias tubing appliqué; it was my first experience with organza (synthetic) and it turned out to a big disappointment because the blouse was accidentally ripped the very first day I wore it. The fact is, the synthetic organza is much more fragile than the silk organza and all it took was a push to rip it beyond repair.

I must thank Els for being so kind to tell me about the silk organza and to provide me with innumerous tips for sewing/dealing this noble fabric. She advised me on techniques, reference books and special purpose notions; I owe a lot to her.
There are many books that can be consulted for techniques on sewing silk organza or any other transparent crisp fabric (The Fabric Sewing Guide by Claire Chaeffer is a wonderful reference, I’ve also consulted the More Sewing Savvy by Sandra Betzina). I ordered the book “All about Silk” but it won’t be delivered until the end of May; too bad because this must be a great reference too on silks in general and I believe it includes some fabric samples.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of reading an excellent article on Silk fabrics at the Blog The Secret Pocket (you can read it here); Dawn, besides being a professional dressmaker, also teaches sewing classes and her articles are very interesting to read if you want to learn about sewing or improve your sewing capabilities. Visit her, you will love it!
Então aqui têm o modelo da blusa, tirado da revista Burda Internacional 01/96:
So here is the original blouse model, taken from the Burda International 01/96 magazine :
The inspiration for the bias tubing appliqué came from the Spring/Summer 92 Burda International magazine:
Next you can see some notions/tools that I've gathered for this project:
Fiquem bem!
There's the silk organza, the buttons (I removed them from the previous blouse), Alterfil thread (it has a special coating which melds with the fabric when ironing that prevents ripping seams when sewing fragile fabrics), ultra-thin silk pins, very thin needles for sewing by hand and by machine (size 60), Thread Heaven (it substitutes bee wax and there is no need to press the thread) a special presser plate for sewing straight stitch (the needle hole is smaller so the fabric won't get pulled down with the needle), the straight stitch special purpose foot and VERY sharp shears to cut the silk organza. There's something missing, a new sewing machine that I plan to buy real soon, but I will talk about that later! Be well!
Nothing better than a red blouse! Els is wonderful, isn't she?
ReplyDeleteSummerset: More than wonderful, I just wish one day I will have the pleasure of meeting her in person and hug her!

ReplyDeleteLadies thank you for the flattering words. Never been called a treasure before but I like it.
ReplyDeleteTany, you are now prepared with the proper notions and the silk organza so the only thing which you need now is time and a new sewing machine to make this new fabulous red organza blouse.

That appliquéd blouse is breathtaking. Truly, one of the nicest things I've ever seen. I'd have just died if it'd ripped on me.
ReplyDeleteI love swirls (and squiggles) myself and have done a few things with free-motion embroidered swirls all over them. I will have to remember to photograph what I have left. Of course, those were much easier, just satin-stitching on linen!
I really admire how you pick one challenging project and go at it methodically start to finish. I'm really looking forward to this one.
Scy: Welcome to Couture et Tricot!
ReplyDeleteObrigada a todas! Thanks to all!
