Dawn: You are right, there are several different ways to do it right, depending on many things mainly the fabric characteristics. Since my practical experience is so limited compared to yours and Els', I appreciate that both of you share your experience so that I can learn and others can learn too. I did spaghetti straps on a dress only once and the pearl button closures on cuffs, only once too. At the time the result seemed fine; the important thing is preventing the stitching from breaking later.
I remember at least two books addressing this matter: one is the "Easy guide to sewing blouses" and the other is the "Clothing Construction" book. I'm sorry not being able to post pictures from these books because of copyright issues. Thanks again for your contribution!

Isabelle You're welcome!
You need to sew the tubes taut and press the stretch out of it after they are turned.
For spaghetti straps a good steam press and let them dry pinned to the iron board will do the trick. For a long evening gown that the weight of the gown can be too tough for the straps a cord filled bias tube is the remedy to prevent breakage from the straps due to the weight of the fabric.
Especially for making button loops you cannot press them into the button loop shape if they are already stretched out. The way I make the button loop bias tubes is cutting strips of bias cut fabric sewn at a narrow wide just wide enough to pass my loop turner for example 3 mm wide and I will trim the excess fabric seam allowance also on 3 mm so the seam allowance will fill the tube. After turning the loops are placed on the iron board and shaped as button loops and steam pressed in shape, dried completely before removing them .The filling of the seam allowance gives a nice rolled loop appearance.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1707374644461378032.post-82332551845102669462007-05-15T01:48:00.000+01:002007-05-15T01:48:00.000+01:00wow!
