Dark Denim with contrasting topstitching: new Unique Jacket and Burda6573 - Conjunto de ganga azul com pespontos contrastantes

EN Summary: Joining two of the strongest fashion trends of the moment (blue denim and contrasting top-stitching), I made a matching set of jacket&pants. It's my second round the BCN-Unique Unique Jacket and my third (!!) round with Burda6573. Keep reading the full review.

Continuem a ler o artigo completo.

EN: The Unique Jacket (get the pattern here) is one of my favorite patterns from Paco Peralta's pattern line BCN-Unique. It is very easy to sew for a jacket (no darts, no set-in sleeves or shoulder pads, no collar, no complicated buttonholes) and its geometric lines hide a flattering subtle shaping. The pattern comes as a single size fitting 32 to 36 bust size range, yet there's also the plus size range version available. The jacket is fully lined (pattern pieces for the lining are included) and has in-seam pockets; it has a single button and in-seam buttonhole at the front closure (next image is courtesy of Paco Peralta).

EN: I've made the first version of this jacket back in 2010 and thoroughly illustrated the construction (check out the final review here, with links to all the tutorials). This time I did it a little differently because of the nature of the denim, which needs little no no reinforcements; I also top-stitched it differently, to match the top-stitching of the pants (seams are pressed to one side and top-stitched close to the seam line).

EN: I purchased the buttons, the blue denim and the quilted lining locally, and the light grey top-stitching thread is Gutermann 40 extra-strong purchased from stoffe.de. I used no interfacing and no front shield for this jacket, only fusible stay-tape along the edges. I started by sewing the shoulder/upper sleeve seams, pressing them to the back and top-stitch close to the seam-line; then I joined upper front facings with back facings at the shoulder seam and stitched the facings to the upper edge front and neckline. I established the break line at approximately 4 inches above the front closure/seam and did my under-stitching accordingly (over the facing below the break point, over the front from the break point to the shoulders and back on the facing side at the back neckline). Then I attached the front bottom panels (which include an all-in-one facing) to the upper fronts with stitched on facing (leaving the sections unstitched at the buttonhole placement on the right front) and did the same with the bottom back panel, attaching it to the upper back. The joining seams were pressed downwards and top-stitched (except for the buttonhole section which has to remain open - the seam allowance needs to be clipped to allow that). Before stitching the under-sleeve seams and the side seams as a single step, I did the decorative top-stitching 1 1/2" above the sleeve's hemline. The top-stitching over a single layer of fabric looks "flatter" so I added a strip of denim underneath, just to cushion the stitches. Finally I pressed the hem allowances up to set a crease and closed the under-sleeve/side seams, leaving the opening for the inseam-pockets. I also set the hem crease at the bottom of the jacket but decided not to add the decorative top-sticthing; the sleeve detail is enough to match the pant's hem which was also tops-stitched. The lining shell is then sewn together and bagged to the jacket (check out the tutorial on my previous Unique Jacket), leaving a small section unstitched to be able to turn the jacket to the right side afterwards. As you can see, I used pre-quilted lining which adds some additional structure to the jacket:

EN: After stitching the lining to the hems and facings the jacket is turned right side out and the hems and facings are hand basted in place; then the jacket is turned inside out again and the facing and hems are hand-tacked in place (It's time consuming if done properly, but is well worth the time spent IMO). Finally the jacket is turned right side out again, the opening in the lining seam is hand-stitched closed and the very last steps are fell-stitching the in-seam buttonhole, stitching in the button and the sewing labels!
---

EN: Here's the top-stitching on the sleeves; as you can see, it is merely decorative and it doesn't catch the lining inside, which has a wearing fold at the hem:
---

EN: The pants are very nice also; this time I placed 6 buttons instead of two, skipping the in-seam pockets and most of the waistband top-stitching of my first version here (my second version hasn't made into the blog just yet):
---

CONCLUSION: I think I succeeded in creating a very trendy pant suit without making an overstatement out of it, keeping it classic enough to wear for many years to come. I was surprised with how quickly I was able to sew this set: I had the pattern ready and the denim pretreated by Friday and started sewing Saturday afternoon; I used three sewing machines in parallel: the Singer 14HD854 serger for the pants seam finishing, the Singer Heavy Duty 4423 (my backup sewing machine) for the stitching and my Pfaff Ambition Essential for the top-stitching; I also optimized my time with a smart construction order. By Sunday morning the pants were finished and later in the evening I finished the jacket. Pfeww!!  I feel like I'm running a small production line at home!
I haven't had the time to take outfit photos yet but as usual, I'll let you guys know when the photos are up. Thank you all for reading!

Bjs

This jacket and pant set is fantastic. I love the contrasting topstitching and denim is one of my favorite fabrics. Such a fun ensemble!
