Blazer flap pockets step by step - Passo-a-passo bolsos de paleta em blazer

EN Summary: Resuming the construction of the blazer Le100, after stitching front panels and side panels together, it's time to sew the flap pockets. Keep reading to see photos of the construction process.

EN: In the instructions provided with the pattern (also available for free download at the pattern's page), you'll get clear instructions and drawings/schematics for the construction of this type of pocket, yet I also recorded it here for future reference. Starting by assembling the flaps, the "good side" of the flap (the visible side as worn) should be interfaced; then the two flap pieces are stitched together right sides facing leaving the top edge open; seams are graded and clipped at round edges and the flap is turned to the right side (use a point turner lightly forcing the seam from the inside to make sure the round edges are impeccable on the right side) and pressed, favoring the good side. The pressing is really important for a crisp finish and I find the use of a wooden block (commonly called tailor's clapper) indispensable at this stage; first you steam press (good side facing down) and then place the clapper on top of the flap, exerting some pressure until the fabric cools down.

EN: There are several methods to construct this type of blazer pockets; the method described in the instructions starts with machine-basting at 3/8" allowance the pre-folded welt to the right side of the outer pocket bag (the smaller pocket bag piece), raw edges matching - the welt width, excluding the 3/8" seam allowance, should be exactly 3/8", to cover the pocket opening. Next repeat with the pocket flap and the inner pocket bag (longer pocket bag piece), machine-basting at 3/8" , right sides facing.
The pocket opening must be clearly marked on the right side of the fronts with the stitching lines at 3/16" from the slash line; note that part of the opening is already slashed, only joined together with the fusible strip on the wrong side; yet the slash line/stitching lines should extend into he side panel to meet the exact length of the flap. Since the opening seam allowances are 3/16" width and the pocket bags allowance is 3/8", I prefer to trim away 3/16" from the pocket bags, using the previous machine basting as reference:

EN: With all the seam allowances at 3/16" it is easier to stitch the pocket bags to the front of the blazer, right sides facing; you need to know exactly where to stop and backstitch (at both edges of the stitching line) so it's useful to stitch one pocket bag at a time, aligning the raw edges with the slash line and stitching on top of the previous  machine basting.
---
EN: When both pocket bags are stitched to the front go to the wrong side and slash the opening using sharp scissors leaving the characteristic "triangles" on the edge of the opening as shown:
---
EN: Then slip the pocket bags and welt through the opening to the wrong side (the flap remains on the right side); make sure the welt edges are on the wrong side between the pocket bags and over the little fabric triangles:
---
EN: As with any other slashed pocket, the pocket bags are stitched together along with the edges of the welt and the little triangles and the pocket is finished on the wrong side:
---
O bolso fica finalizado no avesso:
EN: On the right side, observe that the welt covers the opening (it has the same width of the opening - in this case 3/8"). With the flap closed down, the inner seam allowances should be forced up; depending on the fabric you may wish to top-stitch the flap top seam, forcing the seam allowances to stay up, as seen on the first photo of this article.
---
CONCLUSION: This method produced good results but it needs practice and a keen eye for precision. If you've never made this type of pocket before, I strongly advise practicing with fabric remnants first; just make sure the pocket opening area is interfaced and try to be as accurate as possible with the markings and the stitching. Happy Sewing!
---
Boas costuras!
