Le 003: Robe asymétrique, maille from DP Studio

EN Summary: Today's article reviews the pattern Le 003, my first make using the ready-made patterns from the French brand DP Studio. You can see more photos of me wearing this lovely and original knit dress on Tany et La Mode (here) and if you're interested in exploring the details of the finished dress, keep reading the full article!

EN: I would describe the pattern as form fitting knit dress with turtleneck collar (be aware that collar is also close-fitting), asymmetrical effect achieved by diagonal seam lines opening at mid-thigh level and creating a beautiful cascade drape along the right side of the dress. The back has a center back seam incorporating subtle back shaping, ending at another diagonal seam at high-hip level (refer to the pattern link for live photos/short movie modeling the dress, the technical drawing and a link to download the sewing instructions for free, referred as "Explanatory panel" on the English version of the website). Looking at the model photos you may think the draping reaches the floor, but it really doesn't, at least on me (I'm 5ft7). The pattern comes in a box (see next photo) containing two large sheets of plotter paper with the pattern fully traced and scaled from European sizes 36 through 46 (you can download DP Studio's measurement chart here, just pick the English version; be aware the measurements are metric and not imperial). The printed sewing instructions are also included (both in French and English), along with the DP Studio card and a postcard. The different pattern pieces are not stacked so it would be possible to cut them directly from the plotter paper but I prefer to preserve the original and just copy my size into tracing paper. The seam allowances are included and are optimized for using a serger/overlocker: 3/8", unless otherwise stated. I am very well impressed with both the quality of the pattern and its presentation.

EN: The fabric suggestions for this model are knits with some weight which hold their form well, having a good percentage of stretch (I believe the pattern was drafted with a 20% stretch factor, so it has negative ease). I used a lovely and soft burgundy medium-weight double-knit with good amount of stretch and it proved to be a very good choice. Beware that if you use less stretchy knits, you may have to go up one size and include a back zipper to be able to pull the dress on through the head.
---

EN: In the next photo you may realize how close-fitting the neckline is. In my case it fits close to the neck without being tight, so it's ideal. You may need to test before attaching the collar to the dress, firstly to guarantee that the collar passes through the head and secondly to make sure it fits well around the neck.
---
EN: As shown in the next photo, there's a center back seam so it's easy to insert a zipper there if the fabric doesn't stretch enough.
---
EN: Here's the front drape, what a lovely detail IMO:
---
EN: Of course the best results for this dress are achieved using a serger/overlocker and a coverstitch machine. If you don't own these machines, you'll be alright if you use seaming/hemming techniques that retain the elasticity of the fabric. There's an excellent new Craftsy class that will teach you everything you'll need to know about sewing knits with a regular sewing machine, check it out here.
---
EN: Regarding the pattern instructions included with the pattern, they are quite straight forward and the dress is really easy to sew if you are comfortable with sewing stretchy knits. I added clear elastic to the shoulders and attached the sleeves "on the flat", before closing the side seams; then I stitched side and sleeve seams as a single step.
---
Conclusion: The dress is a huge success and has earned me lots of compliments! I am definitely revisiting this pattern and I look forward to trying some more of the DP Studio patterns! Thank you all for reading and don't forget to visit me at Tany et La Mode and see me wearing the dress!
---
