Miss Fisher's riding suit jacket knock-off: the slanted flap pockets - bolsos inclinados com paleta

EN Summary: These pockets aren't easy to sew without hazards and I thought my readers would appreciate photos of the sewing process, along with my notes (to fully understand the process it's also useful to have the pattern instructions at hand). Keep reading the full article.

Continuem a ler o artigo completo.

EN: When sewing these or any types of pockets involving cutting into your fabric shell, a few requirements must be met initially:

- The area should be interfaced (in this case the pocket opening crosses front and side-front panel and both were fully interfaced, see previous post here).
- Both the outer flap (the one visible when the pocket is finished) and the welt piece should be interfaced.
- The pocket stitching lines/outlines/cutting lines should be marked in a way that they are visible on both wrong side and right side of the outer shell, to facilitate the alignment of the pieces on the right side and then stitching from the wrong side; my method of choice is thread-basting, as you can see (I marked the corners with tailor-tacks, then traced the rectangle and cutting line with a pencil on the wrong side, and then thread-traced all these lines).
- The corners of the opening (the rectangle that outlines the cutting line, marking the upper and bottom stitching lines) should be stay-stitched using a short machine stitch on the inside, right next to the rectangle basted outline; this simple procedure prevents accidents when the corners are clipped to a V-shape after the pocket welt, flap and pocket bags were stitched in place.

EN: The flaps and welt patterns have small circles marking the extremity of the stitching lines and these marks on the flap should align with the upper corners of the opening rectangle (I'm assuming that at this point the flaps are sewn and the welt pieces are folded lengthwise with the right side of the fabric showing); the welt marks align with the bottom stitching line. So it's useful to have these small circles or dots marked on the welts and flaps (I used tailor tacks. as you can see the thread-ends hanging). The flaps are constructed with one side interfaced (the outer/visible side when the pocket is finished); the edging seam allowances (the edge that will be stitched to the pocket opening) should be trimmed to the width of the pocket opening seam allowances (about 1/4") and the same with the folded welts. When flap and welts are placed on top of the marked pocket opening, their allowances should butt together like on the photo (also keep in mind that the interfaced side of the flap is facing down) :

EN: The pocket bags' seam allowances are also trimmed down to 1/4" and they stack on top of the flap and welt as seen below; it was easier for me to remove the flap and self-fabric pocket bag together and join them with a row of machine basting stitches a scant less than the 1/4" seam allowance. I did the same with the lining pocket bag and welt and then pinned all layers to the pocket opening, minding that the edges meet exactly at the pocket cutting line and all small circles are aligned. The pins are inserted from the wrong side because that's the side facing up when I'm machine-stitching along the thread-traced stitching lines (along the longer sides of the rectangle that defines the pocket opening).

EN: This is the view from the wrong side after stitching the long sides of the rectangle and slashing the pocket opening open (you can also see the reinforcement stitches along the rectangle corners).
---
EN: Then the fabric pocket bag is turned to the inside through the opening, and the flap remains on the outside facing down; the lining pocket bag and welt are turned to the inside through the same opening so that the welt stays under the flap and its raw edges and corners go to the wrong side. From the wrong side the pocket bags are stitched together at sides and bottom, catching the little triangles and the welts on the corners:
---
EN: This is how it looks from the wrong side:

PT: É assim que fica do avesso:
EN: I've been without cable and internet at home since last Friday (the service was finally restored today), so my blog posting is very delayed; at this point the jacket is all finished and there are a couple more posts about the construction coming up. I haven't started on the jodhpurs but I plan no do so soon.
Thank you all for joining in and happy sewing!
