Meeting up with Gail and Aveiro sightseeing tour by Moliceiro - Encontro com a Gail e passeio de Moliceiro por Aveiro

EN Summary: Gail from myfabrication.blogspot.com (Australia) is spending a few days in Portugal and came to Aveiro for a short stay. We went on a Moliceiro trip together, which allowed her and my little family to know Aveiro from the water canals perspective. We've spent a lovely time together (picture heavy).

EN: Aveiro has its ancient roots connected with the marine environment. In the ancient times the population would live from fishing, salt production (the Salinas) and agriculture. Ria de Aveiro is a salty lake connected with the ocean and it extends throughout the city with its water canals; that's why this city is also known as the Portuguese Venice. The Moliceiro boats, believed to have its roots within the Phoenician culture, were used to harvest seaweed to fertilize the farmland. In the ancient days these boats would feature a large sail, but nowadays they are propelled by diesel engines and their only purpose is to transport tourists along the water canals. There are other types of boats used the navigate the waters surrounding Aveiro but the Moliceiros are indeed the most popular.
