The coat issue – A minha cena com casacos

Those of you who follow Couture Et Tricot for a long time, will most certainly guess the answer to the question “what’s my favorite type of wardrobe item?”. Yes, the answer is The Coat; no matter how many coats I own already, I’m always wishing for more; there’s always “that color”, or “those style lines” or “that type of fabric”,… And I mean the coats made by me and the ones I purchased; I love coats, period.

We all know that making a coat is a labor intensive task with a lot going on: there’s the pre-treating of the fabric, the interfacings, the cutting, the markings, applying the interfacings, the collar/lapels, the pockets, vents, the lining,… A LOT. With my current time availability, if I was to start making a coat right now I’d be lucky to wear it next winter. Plus, spring is right around the corner now.

Yet, I dream of making a grey blanket coat… On my last fabric shopping trip I found a grey fabric that doesn’t ravel: some kind of double faced felted blend that is soft enough for an unstructured blanket coat yet has some body; one side of the fabric is anthracite and the other is a lighter shade of grey. I went ahead I bought a little more than 3yrd, planning on using it for making the perfect instant gratification coat (no lining, no facings, no major interfacing, and no finishing edges). When I got home I went through my Burda’s magazines and I found a pattern that would fit the bill: BurdaStyle 2012/10, model 103. Hopefully I’ll have some time to trace the pattern next weekend! Winter, don’t go away just yet!

I've mentioned to you before how your coat wardrobe has starting me wanting more and more coats. Your coats have been a real inspiration to me this winter. So I say "yes, coat lady, you must have that new Burda Coat". Not at all like you needed my permission! I know it will be lovely too.

Beijinhos

Coats are my favorite garment to sew also. I am in the middle of making one now and in "hog heaven". Wool is so forgiving and so responsive. It is a delightful experience to work with wool coating.

I think your choice is perfect, minimal effort, maximum style. Can't wait to see it.

Hello , That looks like a perfect project . Is tha fabric one where you can split the layers and turn them in on themselves to creat a perfect edge ?? Maybe you will just serge it or maybe do nothing a all.

Mem: The fabric hasn't splitable edges...I wish it had (but then again it would add a ton of hand sewing, meaning this would not be a quick project anymore)
