Casaco Dior Vintage: Confecção (3) - The making of the vintage Dior coat (3)

Português
English (uncheck the other box and check this one)

O casaco começava a tomar forma:

After two weeks missing in action (life sometimes gets in the way), I am finally back to sewing the Dior coat! It’s almost finished now (as opposite to the last couple of weeks, this weekend has been quite productive)

At this point I’ve finished step 34. First I sewed the facings in place:

Then I hand sewed the hems, reinforced with bias cut strips of interfacing:

Here’re a few photos on the making of the hem and how it’s hand sewn; notice the last picture and how the hem allowance is eased to fit:

At this point the coat looked like this:

Next I moved to the sleeves; there is another interesting detail here: instead of easting the entire sleeve cap, the easing ends before the center top of the sleeve, leaving a small section that won’t be eased here (the thread ends on the small circles are the way I transfer the markings from the pattern to the fabric):

In spite of no shoulder pads being mentioned, I opted for adding lightweight raglan shoulder pads (these were sent to me by Paco some time ago):

I also used Els’ moustache sleeve heads for sleeve padding:

The instructions call for snaps on the inner front; I lined them (I wrote a tutorial, read it here):

These are the last steps before starting on the lining construction:

At this point the coat already looks finished on the outside. I ended up buying another fabric for the lining: satin crepe. This fabric is more luxurious than regular lining; it’s not see-through and has a nice shine to it. Here’s a picture of the coat so far:

Isn’t it beautiful? It’s taking so long to finish but I think the end result will be well worth my efforts!

Paco left another interesting comment on my last post:

Paco said that he remembered another reason for the pattern being cut with the side panels and the front panels all-in-one: at the time most fabrics were 36” wide and it was usual to cut the fronts (side panels included) as a single length, then the back and the facings, and finally the sleeves: the necessary length of fabric for a coat would be calculated as two total lengths plus the sleeve length. It makes perfect sense!

See you next time!

Me encanta Tany.
