V2920: Fato “O Diabo Veste Prada” - V2920: “The Devil Wears Prada” Suit

Português
English (uncheck the other box and check this one)

Well, it’s finished and I won’t wait until after the wedding to show you the final result (that’s because I may take a short vacation next week and some of you could die out of curiousity waiting that long, LOL!).

This model is simply delicious! I highly recommend it to anyone who is an intermediate to advanced sewer and who likes a good challenge and a good puzzle! I guarantee you’ll have lots of fun with this pattern!

The original pattern can be purchased here:
V2920. Though my measurements point to a 14, I cut a 12 and got away with it! I am very pleased!

Presenting the project and seam treatment on the jacket

The fabric rose and the draping on the jacket

The rose pattern and construction

A few details on the pants

The crochet neck choker

Additional details on the jacket:

The inside (still missing the label):

The elastic casing around the back and shoulders that keeps the collar in place:
The satin bias tape bounded hems:
The inside closure next to the side seam (right front side):
The left closure (overlap); note that the eyes were unstitched from the hook&eye band and stitched by hand to the side front, so they stay inconspicuous to the viewer (all this is referred in the pattern’s instructions!):
Additional details on the pants:

The pockets (outside):

The pockets on the inside (note how the pocket bags are turned so the seam allowances are encased by the topstitching! This is also explained in the instructions and provides the perfect finishing!):
The back invisible zipper; when I first tried the pants on, the zipper handle broke in my hands and I almost had a heart stroke. I am used to solving problems and setbacks and immediately thought of a solution, which was using a key older ring covered with crochet stitches! Much sturdier this way and it also looks nice!
On the inside there’s a hook&eye holding the zipper closed just for safety:
Aditional notes:

-The pant’s SAs were serged-finished because I didn’t have enough of
Els’ seam binding tape for the pants (there was enough for binding the zipper tape inside, though!).
- The pants are a little tight but that’s due to a recent gain of weight caused by these past stressful weeks where there wasn’t enough time for going to the gym. The fabric has some stretch on it so this is not a big deal. I do recommend using only fabrics with some stretch (not very stretchy like jersey, but good wovens with a small amount of lycra)
- The elastic around the shoulders is shorter (almost 3 inches) than indicated by the instructions. You can stitch one end of the elastic and leave the other end secured using a safety pin until the jacket is ready for a first try on. This way you can adjust to the exact amount of elastic required so the jacket fits well on the shoulders.
- The fabric rose and the draping took a lot more tacking and hand stitching that the indicated in the instructions, otherwise the rose would fall on its own weight (sorry, I couldn’t get decent pictures of this process).
-
Phyllis mentioned that boning could be required for holding the neckline in place and supporting the rose’s weight. After trying the jacket on I found out it wasn’t needed (at least with this fabric). For strapless styles like this one, extra structure provided by boning may be necessary,
- Cleaning the jacket won’t be a problem either; when I pre-washed the fabric I could see that it won’t wrinkle much and it can be hand washed and hang to dry. I can simply dip the jacket on hot water with wool detergent and shake it a little and then rinse it with running water. Then I can put it on a hanger to dry outside and it will be as new again without the need of additional pressing! Take this into account when you chose your fabric for this jacket!
- The small welt pocket’s bag is shortened so it won’t peek out from inside the waist facing. This way I can hand stitch the satin facing in place without worrying about the pocket bag.

Conclusion: The suit speaks for itself! I just LOVE this suit! It’s comfortable, ultra-elegant, and different; it turned out EXACTLY as I envisioned it! The instructions were actually quite good and include quite a few advanced techniques, like the piped edges using the lining facings, the pockets the fringed seams, etc. I can say I learned a few new techniques from the making of this suit!

bjs, Luciana.

Tany said...
