Um novo projecto: alterações ao molde - A new Project: the pattern alterations

First I want to thank you all for the lovely comments and feedback left on the Unrath&Strano suit. As Linda said, this project shows how close the sewing community is as an international gathering. I am very proud of taking part of this fantastic community! I have yet to show you a few more gifts I’ve received in the mail but since I forgot the pictures in my laptop at home, I’ll show you those in the next post.
My next Project will be the knockoff of a famous Armani coat (Fall 2005 RTW collection). For this project I will use the Vogue V8307, as the base pattern, 4.8 yards of Italian red wool velour (bought at Tissus Reine in Paris) and these buttons:

I believe the original is made of Mohair wool, based on this picture scanned from a fashion magazine; my wool velour isn’t as glamorous but was the best I could find at an affordable price (the Mohair price would be around several hundreds of Euros per meter/yard), and I expect good results from it.
First thing I altered was the collar patterns; first I drafted a straight collar stand (it’s long enough to be sewn between the large circles that mark the CF and about an inch wide – when ready - at the CB, tapering to nothing near the two ends); then I altered the shape of both collar pieces (left and right), as shown next:

The left collar piece was extended and narrowed (you can see the original pattern and the alterations in red pen marker):

The right collar piece was also altered and now its lines are more close to the Armani original:

I also reduced the extra flare below the hip on every pattern piece for the body of the coat, turning it into a more A-line style:
In this scanned image you can see the true A-line shape of the original coat:
Besides all this I am also including in-seam pockets with a flap (I’m not sure this is called a flap in this case). I’m quite sure from the previous picture that the original had slanted double-welt pockets but I thought I like the in-seam pockets, especially because I plan on making the “flaps” asymmetrical or slanted, imitating the lines of the large collar (never mind the rectangular shape of my pattern, I intend to incline the flaps as they are sewn to the pocket’s openings).
Next you can see my test garment for the collar:
Observe that I altered the left collar piece further more, narrowing it and reducing its length (this was made after observing the test garment; on the previous picture the left collar edge is pinned under and from this experiment I obtained the final shape for the collar):
Besides all this I also altered the armholes and the sleeve cap, trying to mimic the famous Armani shoulder line, with narrow shoulders and round sleeve caps. This pattern has a peculiar armhole shape at the back, less deep than usual and it gave me a few headaches at first. I had to deepen the armhole, reducing the back width, also reducing the shoulder length by 1/5 inch and increasing the sleeve cap height by the same amount, otherwise the sleeve would be pulled up. The basic alteration for an Armani style shoulder line I learned from Paco, to whom I owe a lot. The one-piece sleeve pattern is also narrower than the usual Vogue sleeves (I compared it to other Vogue patterns, including two piece sleeves) and it’s shaped by an elbow dart. I hope these alterations will produce good results but I can tell only when I see the final result (the wool velour is very different from the muslin fabric)!
