O colarinho e as vistas - The collar and the facings

Last Sunday I managed to have the collar and the facings done; I still have to make the cuffs, set in the sleeves, sew the buttons & buttonholes and handstitch the bias tubing to the front & back of the blouse. I must get this blouse done by Saturday so forgive me if I don't have time to update again before finishing the blouse!

There a few important things to remember when sewing collars; before turning the collar to its right side (after sewing the two pieces together along the edges and pressing the seams on both sides), the seams should be pressed open, trimmed and clipped at the corners. A very useful tool to press these seams open is the Point Presser/Clapper, that makes reaching the difficult pointed angles much easier.
Outra coisa importante a reter é que a parte de cima do colarinho deve ser sempre um pouco maior do que a parte de baixo para o colarinho poder dobrar bem no pescoço;
Another important thing is that the upper collar should be slightly bigger to accommodate the turn of the cloth on the neckline fold.

Vejam o resultado final:
I trimmed the SAs to about 5mm, turned the collar to its right side, handbasted the edges and pressed it gently. I topstitched the collar 5mm away from the edge using the blind hem foot that came with my new machine; the raw edges are encased by the row of topstitching (I would never think of using this presser foot to make invisible hems, I prefer sewing them by hand; other than that I find it very useful for topstitching); if you look at the collar against a light source, the effect created by this edge on the transparent fabric is very nice!

Next I must attach the collar to the body (this blouse doesn't feature a collar stand) and encase it between the facing and the front panel as I stitch the neckline; first I sew the facings to the front panels and repeat the "press as I sew" procedure (press along both sides of the seam, trim to 5mm, press the seam open – 5 is the magic number here!). Before turning the facings to the inside I hemmed the shirt and the facings: I simply turned the SAs inside twice so that the final hem width is about 5mm and topstitched it.

If you pay close attention to the pattern (as for many blouse patterns) you will find out that there's no back facing; to keep the raw edges from showing at the back neckline I used a self fabric bias tape about 4cm wide (long enough to cover the back neckline and a little more), folded lengthwise and I stitched it along with the collar (see the line drawing; the bias strip fold is pointing down and its raw edges are together with the collar/body/facings raw edges, already trimmed and clipped). The main objective is obtaining a 6mm cover to the collar raw edges:
After stitching the collar in place, turning facings to the inside, handbasting the edge and pressing it very carefully with the help of my tailor ham, I did a final topstitching along the neckline edge very close to the fold on the bias strip (guess what: 5mm away from the seam line!); never mind the color distortion in the next picture:
The facing is also finished along the inside edge trimming the SAs to 5mm and pressing them to the inside; then two rows of topstitching encase the raw edges as seen next; front edges are also topstitched the same way:
The facing topstitching detail (for the topstitching I used thin embroidery thread):
Cuffs are made exactly as the collar, with the 5mm topstitching encasing the raw edges inside; I will show you the final result soon! Thank you for visiting!

Yes, it looks lovely, & I agree with you about the foot. I'd never use it to blindstich a hem, but it's really useful for topstitching.

Tany,

I've used a bias strip of self-fabric to finish the neck edges of a couple blouses, and love the finish it gives - nice and neat!

I've enjoyed following your progress on this blouse - your sewing is impeccable :-)

Pearl: Thank you! I've used other methods (like clipping SAs near the shoulders, turning them upwards to the collar and sewing the upper collar back neckline seam by hand encasing the SAs) but I liked this method best for this blouse because the fabric is so sheer and transparent. Welcome to Couture et Tricot!

A very elegant solution to hide the raw edges, great work, tany.

Looking good! Good luck with the rest of it.

I have to say I have used the blind hem foot on occasion. The last time was taking up the hem on my daughter's school uniform. It is a wool check with lots of pleats. You have to look very hard to see it and it is more sturdy than handsewing. Hopefully it will stay up this time ! :)

It looks very nice! I'll have to remember to check your blog before I make my next collar. I recently discovered that my blind hem foot is very helpful for stitching-in-the-ditch. I had not thought of using it for topstitching. I've never found it useful for hems, LOL. I was hand-hemming for years before I even got a machine, so I guess I got used to doing them that way.
