A musselina e a primeira prova - The muslin and the first fit

It's quite difficult to fit a garment on ourselves without a sewing friend to give us a hand; If you don't have a sewing friend with fitting experience, you must improvise.

The step order is as follows (for the actual garment the order will be different because the zipper is attached before sewing the CB seam; also there's more emphasis on the pressing of the garment and, of course, there's the facings and the lining to mind about):

-coser as pinças horizontais (frente) e assentá-las na direcção da cintura;
-sew horizontal darts (front) and press them towards the waist;
-coser as pinças verticais (costas) e assentá-las em direcção ao meio;
-sew vertical darts (back) and press them towards CB;
-coser a costura do meio de trás até o sinal da abertura do fecho;
-sew CB seam from hem to the zipper opening;
-coser com a linha da agulha frouxa o restante da costura do meio, até ao pescoço;
-sew the zipper opening with loose tension on the needle thread (so it's easier to remove the bobbin thread just by pulling it, after the zipper is basted in place);
-abrir a ferro os valores de costura da costura do meio das costas;
-press CB SAs open;
-alinhavar o fecho e descoser a abertura;
-handbaste the zipper to the opening and unstitch the zipper opening by pulling the bobbin thread;
-sew side seams and shoulder seams.

Darts should always be sewn from side to center (horizontal darts) and from the middle to the dart ends (vertical back darts);
To handbaste the zipper in place I first pin it carefully so it's well centred on the wrong side of the zipper opening; I handbaste from the zipper opening notch to the neck on both sides of the zipper, removing pins as I go:
This is the end result after pulling the bobbin thread (right side):
This muslin is only for fitting purposes so I don't mind the loose thread ends; seams should be slightly pressed.

You should wear the undergarments and the shoes that you'll be wearing with the final dress when fitting; both can influence the hanging of the final garment.

For the first fit I like to put the muslin on wrong side out; this way I can easily pin the excess fabric when fine tuning. Sometimes I have to repeat this process several times before I'm pleased with the result. A full length mirror is mandatory but even with such a mirror it gets difficult to evaluate the fit on the back. Els submitted a tip on PR where she suggests using a camera to film you while moving with the muslin on so it's possible to fully evaluate the fit. You can read it here.

Podem ver fotos da minha primeira prova:
These are photos of my first fit:
You can see that there are a few issues: the dress is too tight at the hips and chest (*gasp* I must have gained a few pounds during this past month: too much Orwell coat sewing and no time left to go to the gym can do that to you); it has a little excess ease at the back waist and it needs to be lengthened. The hem should be ending at a place where the leg is thin, otherwise it won't be flattering, and hence I'm lengthening this dress a bit.

Other important things to mind when fitting a dress are the bust point (darts should be pointing to center bust, not above or bellow), the correct placement of the waist line and the direction of the vertical seams; all these seem alright to me. The neckline and the armholes seem ok considering that at this point the SAs weren't turned inside as they will be on the second fit. After making all the necessary adjustments I turn the SAs inside on the collar and armholes and handbaste them in place. It's time for the second fit, this time with the right side out!

After transferring all the alterations to the pattern, next step will be cutting the fabric! See you soon!

I do the same things you do! I usually don't have a fitting partner, either so I have my photography crew (the children) take pictures so that I take a good look at what I've done to myself. If it's a really, really, important garment, I'll have my mother in-law (who is a fantastic seamstress!) come over and help fit.

I also put things on inside out for fittings - I find it's more acurate to transfer changes that way. I tend to use markers on the fabric too - to draw new lines for stitching. Since it's usually muslin or "junk" fabric it doesn't matter!

wow, you really handbaste the zipper into the muslin!
i didn´t do this for like *decades*... i just let the hubby pin the backseam closed *g*
but, of course i know in advance where i need to adjust the burda-patterns. they always use their standard measurements for their stuff.
don´t know - how about the designer patterns? do they different fit than the "normal" magazine patterns?

Summerset: We have lots in common! When I was living at my parents home there was a neighbour dressmaker that would help me with the fit sometimes. Now I have to do it all by myself!
Madhatter: I didn't trace the designer pattern (the one sent by Tini) yet... I'll find out soon (the Orwell coat was just a Burda pattern modified to meet the Orwell coat style lines), but I’m guessing it’s the same fit. I’ll make a muslin first, of course!

Wow, where is that dress from? It is super cute! And also, where in the world did you find those great stockings? I have been looking for some like that for a long time!

Hi Crystal, welcome to Couture et Tricot! The dress is featured in Burda World of Fashion Magazine 01/2007 (model 106). Thank you for your comment!
